We are nearing the insulating phase of our new garage. here is what we have. It is 24W by 28D. The first floor is block. the 2nd floor is a full 2nd floor with 8ft 2 x 6 stud walls. This floor will be my wifes art/quilting studio. She wants exposed roof trusses though. We are going to probably do a mini split to keep her floor better climate controlled than the lower floor. The walls we can use fiberglass insulating or even spray in but I do not know where to go with this exposed roof truss idea. I thought of maybe foam boards on the roof covered with a metal roof but I am not sure how much that helps retain heat and block cold. Open to suggestions and ideas. Thanks

Insulation with exposed trusses is extremely hard as I would think it would all have to be exterior insulation.

Not sure what the appeal is in seeing all of the roofing nails or screws sticking through the roof deck, but to each their own.

You could also put foam board underneath the roof sheathing between trusses, but if it’s exposed you’re just going to see foam board. This method is also not preferable as you have major thermal bridges where the 2x material top chord of the truss is, with worse losses than that of a wall with the same number of thermal bridges.

R19 batts in the walls.

Have you considered a finished ceiling with faux exposed beams?
That would give you space to blow in cellulose and the look of a beam ceiling.

Your “beams” could be plywood boxes or foam shapes.

I would recommend spray foam on the ceiling and cover that with the faux beams.
The novelty of the exposed beams will wear off quickly if she's not comfortable in her art studio.
Worst case scenario, insulate it extremely well and hang a picture of a log cabin with beam roof construction for her to look at. :D
