Insulation tips for first timer

I am just about ready to insulate and I have 24" batts most of my voids are 15" which is going to leave me with a bunch of 9" waste pieces.
Can I use two strips of 9" side by side to insulate or would the gap in the middle defeat the insulation ?
I do not mean to sound cheap I am just wondering if there is any use for the scraps.

You can, since the 9" pieces will total 18", overlap them in the middle by trimming 3" thru half the depth of the batt.

I read a couple weeks ago that a 1/4" insulation gap in a stud cavity leads to a 30% reduction in efficiency for that cavity. IE, put a 1/4" gap in and your R-13 turns into R-9.

Feel free to use scraps, just make sure to avoid gaps and keep the insulation expanded to the correct size to make sure your money is well spent.

BTW... is there a reason you bought 24" batts if your studs are 16" OC?

That is all that was available to me when I purchased them .... I will see how i works out tomorrow sun went down and too cold to go back out tonight.

Especially since the 24" batts are 2-3x as expensive per SF, at least here locally.

Why not return them for the correct size? Also while were on this subject does everyone lap the edges of the kraft facing over the studs on the face of the stud or do you run them onto the side of the stud and then staple them to each side? When doing my house 12 years ago we (the "Ol Lady" and I) stapled the kraft facing onto the sides of the studs and on nights of high humidity when coming up the street beside our house, you can pick out the location of every stud on the side of the house in the streetlights reflection. I hope you all get what I'm trying to throw at you. Also please note that is the Ol Lady not the OLD LADY. Here in my little town "Ol Lady" is a term of endearment andnot a put down as in OLD LADY.

The flaps on the kraft facing go over the stud and overlap each other if done properly.

I'm a newbe here, Hello, We are getting ready to put insulation in our new addition
( walls and ceiling ) note getting to the attic in the add-on is not a option to small of a opening to get insulation in so we will need to put it in before the drywall goes up both on the in the walls and ceiling, the insulation has kraft paper, Do we leave the flange of the paper and staple it to the inside or the outside of the wall studs also do we install it the same way to the ceiling, we also must pass Wichita Kansas code inspectors so I want to do it correct the first time. Thanks.

generally the kraft face goes to the heated side of a room and it should be on the face of the studing so it overlaps and creates a vapor barrier. so you staple it on the 1.5" side AND you need to nail down the staples so the dry wall lays flush

For the insulation to work it has to have it's full 'fluff' meaning you can't compress it.
Also for full effect it should have six side contact. Air gaps or voids kill it's rating

Do you do the ceiling the same as the walls flange stapled to the 1.5 of the studs ?
