What would be a good insulation for a pole barn in the midwest? It will be used for primary vehicle parking, auto maintenance, and lots of other guy stuff (including but not limited to escaping the wife and two kids).

My builder had suggested the double bubble foil wrapped stuff, but I pretty sure that is a terrible idea. I will likely go for the sprayed in foam. I know the foam is a lot more money, but is there another good option that may be cheaper?

Go with closed cell spray foam, if you can afford it. 1.5" will give you both an excellent air seal and roughly R-10, while 4" will give you around R-24. Check with local building code folks to see if you have to cover it. I'm building a new building and plan to go with 1.5" overall and either 4" or 5" in the shop area (the only area that will be heated/cooled. YMMV
