I've had several interviews with a shop and all that's left is running my driving record. I was told as long as I am insurable I will have the job. Does anyone know how bad your record can before you're screwed out of a job?

If part of your job is driving company vehicles, or customer vehicles, then by all means your driving record will come into play. If you are straight tech only, then they "shouldn't" be able to hold your driving record against you.

So tell us . . . how "bad" is your driving record that has you this worried??

You have any wrecks, speeding, DUI's or what?? Good luck either way.

I just have a red light ticket from a year ago and a speeding ticket from two years ago but the speeding one was done away with since I did the traffic school. I'm really just curious about it. I'm nervous since this is my first big move from small repair shop to larger dealership.

Edit: (So no wrecks thank god and never a DUI) although I am pretty young at 21

There is no set answer to this. It is dependent on the employers discretion.

If the job requires you to drive on company time (ie: deliveries, test drives, sales calls, etc.), than they will want to see a pretty clean record with no DUI's, reckless driving tickets and such. It is a huge liability to a company.

As far as "being screwed out of a job", as an employer I would be looking at it as "dodging a bullet".

Good Luck...

I would consider that to be a clean driving record. Like Red Goat said, I think they are looking for major infractions. I would think you are good.

Sorry about that man. I didn't really mean it like screwed over by the employer not wanting to hire someone for the record. I meant it more towards Insurance companies that well that's pretty much all they do haha

The only people I know that were “screwed out of a job” were the Chilean mine workers who were rescued by drilling a shaft to their location.

Look at the situation from the employer’s viewpoint. By checking, they avoid future legal hassles. It is up to the insurance company to determine whether you are insurable. “Bad” is subjective because some insurance companies will insure you but at a premium price. It will then be up to the employer to decide.

Anymore, just having a license is a good thing. Lot of guys ride a bike while looking for work. Good luck. I think you're good to go. Bill

I had 2 speeding tickets on my record and when my employer got new insurance i was not allowed to drive company vehicles any longer. Each insurance and employer will be different

Your going to be fine.

Now....if you had a DUI within the last 3 years or you were charged with evading the police, then, yea, you might be screwed.

My son has worked as a tech (now a service advisor) for several dealerships. He is always concerned about his driving record.
It depends on the insurance contract that the dealer has. Some are more lenient than others, some go by points against your license.
Insurance companies don't want to be liable for some 18 year old tech with multiple speeding tickets "test driving" a new Corvette after an oil change.
The sales staff is under the same scrutiny as well.

You should be alright. Running a red light is a moving violation but it's only 1. If you had a couple of moving violations you probably wouldn't get hired. A DUI is a definite no-no. In todays marketplace, especially in the automotive field, having a clean driving record is a huge asset! Your 21 with only one mover. Be smart. Keep your record clean. It pays dividends in the long run!

Yep, it keeps you employable, saves money on insurance, and may potentially save your life or some other person's life -- if you drive safely.

I don't think you have anything to worry about with just one violation.

THere shouldn't be an issue. It might be if the shop is very upscale though.
