Nope. My insurance company sends a questionnaire every year and they ask about wood stoves, dogs and recently trampolines. Never a question about my lift that I have had for about 20 years. If they were concerned, they would ask. My insurance doesn't cost $1000 per year. Maybe he needs to go insurance shopping.

In my 25+ years of owning a home, I have NEVER been asked about having a lift, wood stove or a dog. Trampolines and swimming pools - yes, but have never had either.

I'll bet more people die under jack stands than die under a lift. Idiot insurance companies. Time to go shopping for new coverage.

Never been asked about a lift or anything in the shop for that matter, even when we upped our insurance on the building and personal property assets. The first two questions asked were do you have a swimming pool and is the yard fenced?

We've switched home insurance 3 or 4 times in the last few years. I had never asked nor been asked about a woodstove, car lift, trampoline, etc. Only had one tell us to tear down a garage or they wouldn't cover us. Just had our car insurance agent deny coverage on a vehicle titled in my fathers name because "state law does not allow a policy on others vehicles". I was able to confirm with our state government that no statute exists. Switched insurance after that.

Mine probably asks about wood stoves because we live in western NY, where wood is plentiful and winters are cold. Every insurer I ever had asked about dogs, because they can lead to substantial claims. Some dogs are considered to be aggressive breeds, so they charge accordingly. My garage cat does not count.
In NY we can register and insure a vehicle that is titled to someone else.
As far as parking on or under the lift, I don't think the insurance would care. The incidence of something happening with my lift in my locked building are far less than driving down the road or parking in a parking lot, especially overnight at a hotel.

Insurance is regulations very dramatically from state to state so it's possible that there are some areas where folks are asked about lifts or there's something buried in their policy that talks about them.

I called my insurance about coverage for my still-under-construction detached garage. They told me I was automatically covered for 10% of the rebuild cost of my house. Increasing it to 15% is $12 a year in my case. I went ahead and did that. Call me frivolous, but I told them to go ahead and make it active, even though the GC's insurance would cover it for the next month while it's still under construction. I just spent a dollar on coverage I didn't have to. Now I don't have to remember to call back.
There were no questions about lifts. The only question was about how it would be used. If it's a shop, then flood insurance does not cover it. The flood insurance only covers it if it's used as a garage.

I wondered about this when I installed my lift. Never asked never told. It is a tool out in the garage just like all the others..... They have asked about dog, pool and trampoline. they never asked about my Oxy/Act. setup either.

Did your buddy call and ask if there would be an increase in his insurance if he added the lift to his garage? never heard of an insurance company asking about a lift.

My insurance agent is a friend of the family and he helped set mine up. No price raise what so ever.

For hobby use, insurance does not care. Tell them you do car repairs for others for compensation and your rates will skyrocket if you are not cancelled.

1. OP said 'he was told"...this is NOT necessarily "told by an insurnace company".

2. I am waiting for ONE SINGLE PERSON to state that their home lift was an issue for an insurer.

Still waiting.

Can't say about a lift, but I can confirm a pit in your garage increases the insurance premiums. My friend wanted to put one in when he built his garage and the insurance company said it would increase the rates. The town told him it would require paying service garage tax rates, too... Same thing the town told my Grandpa back in 1951 when he built his house and wanted to put in a pit...
