Intel Galileo Board Free!

This isn't really a tool per se but its useful for those of us that are more technologically inclined. The Intel Galileo is a high-powered version of the super common Arduino board. Arduino is a simplified microcontroller which can be used for automation and monitoring. Before, Arduino, microcontrollers were dense difficult affairs to program. The goal of the Arduino project, a fully open-source project by the way, was to create a microcontroller board so easy that an artist could use it.

To give you an idea of how it can be used. A common project is to use an Arduino connected to soil hydrometers and a water solenoid. The hydrometers monitor water levels in the dirt, and the user programs the arduino to turn on and off the solenoid, water ing plants automatically when the soil gets too dry. Another use is for cigar humidors, controlling the temp and humidity and keeping it inside set values. Basically, any repetitive action or system where you use a sensor to control a result can be made using an Arduino. Honestly, the uses are endless and only limited by the users imagination.

This is a much more powerful version of that. Microsoft is currently giving these away for free, so if you were on the fence about trying it out, here is a chance to get one.

I didn't see where they were handing out free boards, where did you see that? I was going to build an Arduino system to control some Pool automation stuff, so this may be interesting.

My dog asks if you can get one that makes Rum Punch Drinks to his specifications!

I apologize, it actually doesn't say anything explicit on that site. The information I received is from:

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/151720

That being said, clicking the link at OzBargains and using my work email resulted in NO email. Copy/Pasting the link I posted above into a new tab and using my gmail address worked just fine. Usingthe second method I received the following email:

Hi XXXX,

We want to thank you for your interest on windowsondevices.com, and we are super excited to have you participate in the “Windows Developer Program for IoT”.

We would like to share our SDK and a hardware development kit with you. In order to mail you the kit, please click on the link below to provide your address and a bit more information.

*custom link redacted*

We’re happy to be able to share this early preview with you, and can’t wait to see what you can make with it!

Thank you,

Microsoft IoT Team

After filling out the additional information (basically your shipping address and confirmation of the other info you filled in).

I received the following email:
XXXX,

Thank you for signing up for the Windows Developer Program for IoT. We’ll let you know when your kit has shipped.

Thank you,

Microsoft IoT Team

Cool story bro time::D
As for your rum punch, a slightly funny story. At my work a year ago, we purchased a VERY high-end piece of research equipment. Think almost six-digit price tag. It's a device used to separate and purify biological samples. One of the modules we purchased was a buffer blender. Basically, it is used to create custom solutions on the fly. When it was installed, the Project Head came and observed. He told us a story about how they realized the buffer blender was perfect for making mixed drinks. So in their lab they set up one of these devices with lab bottles on top labeled: Buffer L (Lemon Juice), Buffer V (vodka), Buffer C (Cranberry Juice), Buffer G (Gin), Buffer T (Triple Sec), etc. People then started stopping by and pouring their own drinks with it. He said it kept going for months until Health and Safety got word of it and stopped by unannoucned one day. He said luckily they were there and they just slipped the bottles under the lab bench. Did I mention biologists and chemists are typically one step away from raging alcoholics?
End Cool story bro time.

Also related to your mixed drink question.

In my pre-kid pre-house younger days I built this ->

So I can assure your dog that it can be done  . We did it pre Audrino/Pi, it would be easier with all of the consumer friendly tech available today.

It never did anything when I tried using my gmail address. I put in my work e-mail, and the form submitted right away. Strange.

Thanks to the OP though, I've been wanting to play around with these things for a few projects.

How long did you have to wait for the followup email? I wonder if they're screening by email domain name.

I submitted requests from both a hotmail and .edu address. No luck here. I wonder why?

Submitted with personal Gmail address and instantly received an email asking for shipping info, then another email saying they will notify me when my kit ships. Will probably try for one more at my work email and physical address, I've got a few projects these will be good for.

Giving it a shot!

I've done a lot of work with FEZ, which is a .NET version of Arduino. Unfortunately the company (GHI) keeps discontinuing the devices and releasing new ones.

Anyone else getting the "*.azurewebsites.net" warning with the links? Assuming it's nothing to worry about? (I got an auto response from them, and it redirected there...)

Yeah, I tried two different email domains, no dice. Maybe I'm overqualified? I checked most the boxes since I've used them all in the past, maybe they're looking for "new" developers.

Others reported getting the link immediately, even on the same email domains (Gmail) even after I submitted.

I just signed up and they sent me the response email (yahoo account) within minutes. I had the following boxes checked:

Win-32, C, C++, Python, Arduino

I tried two email addresses, with no luck.

When I tried my last email address with theses options, I got the email confirmation immediately for the kit to be sent:

Your projects are best described as: Enterprise Prototype
Your experience in programming in Windows: Win-32, Win-RT, .Net
What languages do you have experience with: C, C++, Javascript/Node.js, C#, VB
What development boards have you used in projects: Ardunio, Rasberry Pi, Spark IO

Thanks. This combo worked, not sure if it was that or me using a new (work) email address.

I did the same and got a response right away to the same e-mail I tried yesterday. They are obviously looking for a certain profile and not just someone who wants to tinker with it.

Sweet thanks, used the same info and got an email. I didn't realize these things were $80! You can program them using the Arduino libraries too?

Dont get your hopes up- this is posted all over the place, and someone on slickdeals said it was actually posted 4 months ago, so chances are slim considering hoards of people who don't even know what it is are signing up for it.

It seems that they are targeting very specific people with this I guess. Enthusiast, C, C++, Win-32, Arduino is what I had entered.

Two days ago I used my regular email and had a response almost immediately. No shipping confirmation as yet. Also when I filled out the questionnaire most everything was left blank as I have no programming experience so I don't think they are qualifying people in that regard.

Just did it this morning, got first email, then sign up on the link and give some personal information and received this last email but no shipping confirmation. I think this is some sort of plot to get your personal information and steal your project ideas. Too good to be true.

Signed up, got the same canned message saying that they'll contact me when they have more to share. Not counting on it. I'm still learning about these boards and just how friendly they are to tinker with. Since the hard part (the interfaces) is done, it's really just a matter of programming it to recognize the sensors and inputs you have available. I have some ideas on that already.

This really bothers me. I do embedded dev, and a board like that would actually be useful to me. I'm willing to bet that 90% of SlickDeal'ers are going to load the Blinky-LED code once, then toss it in a drawer and forget it. An ethernet-enabled MCU like this is a really good dev device.

And why would they only send the second email that requests additional info to some? If they were fishing everyone would be getting the follow up
