Interchangeable Screwdriver Systems

I'm trying to replace a screwdriver set from my motorcycle tool kit. I've considered just using 1/4" bits but the driver head is too bulky.

I've found a tiny set from Wiha, but they are only available in precision sizes.

Other than that I've seen some stuff from Xcelite, but it is pretty restricted in the handle sizes. I am thinking about going that way and making some modifications to the handles... Slimming them down and drilling a hole in the handle.

I found a very complete set on ebay but it disapeared (buy it now) while I was looking at it.

Has anyone got any other suggestions.

The Wiha with the bit magazine in the handle is pretty neat, but Monte's always quick to display German-made tools that aren't available in the US. It looks like the model number is 38590 - anyone know of a dealer that distributes these in North America?

The Wiha US distribution center is in Monticello, MN (just NW of Minneapolis/St. Paul.) The web site is http://www.wihatools.com and they do sell to individuals. Don't find P/N 38590 on the web site.

I know Wiha sells in the US, I own many of their tools. What I asked was can you buy that particular tool in the US. I can't find one - can you?

edit: It appears the 38590 is a version that has phillips and Torx bits, the one shown that has phillips and flat is 38589. But none to be found, either.

I think I've decided on the PicQuic ones... I've ordered the Metric Hex bits online and picked up a couple of the handles. I wish they made the other bits for the Multique since it is thinner.

I suspect I will either turn the handle down in the lathe or eliminate it entirely. I'm not concerned about having everything in one package so much as having multiple bit available when something comes loose on the road.

1/4" drive with 1/4 shank (or maybe 3/8" drive with 1/4 shank) bit socket with extension and ratchet. Tis a decent setup for me for squirrel hole type stuff.

People don't tend to use bit sockets that much because availability is sketchy but it's something I recently tagged onto because I got a bit socket with the kobalt double drive set and found good use for the setup (with another ratchet of course:bounce:). I don't think that set comes with an extension though but you could get the kobalt lighted extensions for around 3 bucks so...total cost around 10 bucks + a ratchet you probably already have or:

My ratchet recommendation is that performance tool ultralight 3/8" ratchet if you can find it cheap enough (under 5 bucks). Less weight than a screwdriver (at least my screwdrivers) according to my hands.:headscrat

This is my "do it cheap" recommendation. There are some bit sockets running around on the internet just make sure the hex is 1/4" (whatever drive) because that's the most common hex shank size. It'll look like a deformed 1/4 hex (pinch hex) unless it's magnetic don't just get a 1/4" socket and think it will hold the shank, it won't.

Most of this information should be correct.
