If cell service in house is dead, do you have a landline? Can she call your cell phone and have it work in the shop or do you not get cell phone service in the shop? Do you have Internet access in the garage ? Set up a VOIP phone and call home. Walkie talkies are great if they are on, charged, with you , turned up , etc...

I dont have the specifics on how to make it work; but I've seen landlines re-purposed for this type of feature. Basically a pair of old school landline phones wired to each other (and nothing else). When one is picked up the other would ring and vice versa.

Depends on the phone, but there are apps available to send SMS over WiFi. Also check into Google Voice - it will use WiFi.

Not without 90vAC for ringing voltage and loop current to power the phones. Old school phone is a unpowered device.

Good point, if wifi is available, they could also do a Skype call with their cell phones (assuming they are of the "smart" variety) .. Skype to Skype calls are free..

My wife brought this up as a xmas present for me. (lol)
Said this way she can tell me things while I'm under the car or something.
I don't say no to her often, but when I do ......

cell service dead zone, I have a landline for phone and DSL internet. No hard line to shop - yet? Heck, I don't even have permanent heat - yet!
Actually the subject of intercoms came because she just happen out one day about the time a snowblower tipped over on the lift and sort of pinned me. I'm a big boy and it annoyed me more than hurt me, but she saw a 911 call and ambulances and doctors rushing to surgery. She then wanted a way to "check up" on me from the house (60ft away). I understand that she may not want go outside when she is in her "jammies" (if she did, we would be back to the "shop ***" thing). I did counter her reason with "what if you intercom me and I don't answer? Won't you have to come out here away?"
So, we are currently exploring the intercom stuff..... :willy_nil
happy wife, happy life

I can recall growing up that my mom would dial our number and hang up and all the phones in the house and garage would ring-what happened to that?

The easiest way would be the small FRS/GMRS 2-way radios. No bigger than a cell phone and some brands have rechargeable batteries and charging stands. Some use just 2 or 3 AA batteries.

Some of these units can use headphones and boom mics and belt holders such as a clip.
This is exactly what we use. Bought them a couple years ago for about $25. When I go out to the garage, I turn on the one sitting on the kitchen window sill, it sits in it's own charging base.

Whatever you put you choose make sure it has batteries, that gives you the perfect "excuse" for not answering when you are busy :)
