Intercom systems

Do alot of people use intercom systems in the garage? I am curious about the garage only.....I know about the homes....those of you that do have them what are your thoughts


Also what about a phone? I remember when I was a kid my family had a phone in the garage so it was easy to answer it if you were in the garage or just getting in from being out and about....I know alot might take there cordless out....but I was thinking about a totally separate phone for the outside so you didnt get your house phones dirty or wet being outside

These days there are cordless phone systems that have a base station and several handsets. The handsets do not require phone lines, the phone line just goes to the base. The handsets have little charger bases that you set them in to keep the batteries charged. These systems also allow intercom functionality between the base and each handset, or between handsets. I have the Siemens 8825 that I bought three years ago. It supports two phone lines. I'm sure that new models have come out since then. I think that something like this, with one of the handsets living in the garage, should solve both of your problems.

I think it would be so much handier to have a phone in the garage....with a cord so you would never loose the handset

Just go to walfart or wherever and pick up the cheapest corded phone you can find. Let it get dirty and beat up,a nd when it breaks, who cares... you onlyp aid 9.99 for it! Some people like shop phones, but IMHO, its just a waste of money, more or less for the guy who likes the "show garage"

Want something cool?...try 2 quarts of old Texaco Motor Oil, preferably 30 W, non-detergent, empty both cans into your favorite squirt cans, attach a strong but slim cord, place ione can in the bottom, the other in the top floor, attach a stout but thin cord, and yell like hell...it works, honest!

I have the Motorola Sets with intercom (can also be used as a walkie talkie if needed). This provides paging into and out of the garage, as well as cordless capabilities.

I also have a cheap corded phone in the garage, just in case it is closer. Also, the ring is louder.

THey usually ring annoyingly loud, and you sure as hell dont have to worry about it every breaking on ya!

I love this place!

read the two cans / string idea...read the payphone idea....searched ebay...saw the old old phone with the separate mouthpiece....thought about the old ship communication systems where they uncork the funneled tube and speak into it and YAHTZEE!!!!

I'm gonna run some piping from the shop to the house, get some brass bugle ends (the big ends), find some corks and bingo, I've got comms!



nah, I'm just gonna get one of those "rugged" cordless phones, with a keypad and speaker in the base. that way, if the cordless is buried in the toolbox, I can still use the phone.

It must have the all important, "press here to find handset" button!

My nieghboors dog is a beer runner Just put a can (bottles tend to get dropped) in her mouth, and she will bring it to her "owner" funniest thing ever.

We've used one of these for a couple years...it's outstanding especially for the price. Has a range of over 100 feet. My shop is abut 25 feet from house and total distance between stations is about 45 feet. It's a Radio Shack FM wireless intercom Cataloque # 43-486. Has page, monitor or talk features. One great feature is when wife calls me I don't need to respond if I want to not obey her command. I just tell her I had the shop station set in the monitor position.
