This is going up in my neck of the woods... I'm not affiliated in anyway, just thought some of you might find it interesting. I like the idea, but an pretty sure it will be well out of my price range. From what I've read, it's high end garages for sale, intended to create a community for car enthusiasts. I don't think there will be living spaces, just garages, places to hang out, and bathrooms.

There's a similar place in the Minneapolis area: http://automotorplex.com/ They have a couple other locations in Chicago and Kansas City, and I know there are similar places around the country. The thing is, you can make them as basic or as fancy as you want - you buy the empty shell and then build it out yourself. Some of the garages at the one here are pretty much just four walls and a workbench, while others are over the top.

I like the idea but would want mine to be used for rebuilding as well as storage. There was talk recently of a gearhead developer buying the old Packard plant in Detroit and converting it to car condos. However I have since seen the story again with no mention of a car condo, just houses.

Parker eh?
Looks pretty sweet. But appears to be driven to the highest priced collectors.
I really like the idea, and hope it catches on. Be even better if they had another "community" for the average joe too :)

Cool, now the guys who don't mind having the "association" tell them when it's time to mow your lawn, what you can do on your own property, etc. can have a bunch of stuck up strangers telling them what they're allowed to do in their own garage as well....

I own a storage condo/ shop and the association takes care of the lawn( not really sure why you think you would have a lawn to take care of) . Obviously you know nothing about condo's and HOA's . You own everything from the walls in. They can't tell you what you can or can't work on inside your shop( besides cooking meth or something illegal like that). Some places won't let you run a business out of them. They also frown on putting certain types of lifts in (vintage single post lifts and pits). The reason for this is because they don't want the concrete cracking and migrating into other tenants sections. They also don't let you park vehicles out side. This keeps the hillbillies from leaving cars outside and up on blocks and turning it into an eyesore . They are a great idea for people who want to get away from the house or have no room to add on to their garge.

I also own one and agree 100% of what you are saying. There are alot of good posters on this forum with tons of knowledge, but there is always a few who just have to chime in to be heard. These people really need to read more posts and stop filling this forum with bad information.

I really suspect this is out of my price range, but out of curiosity, how much do these kinds of places go for?

I am a garage/condo guy as well. I have about 800 sq ft of garage under me. We bought it about a month ago. So its still full of house stuff as we slooooowly seem to unpack.
I get to work on my projects and some other poor soul has to do the yard work. I love it.

Sounds like you just outlined what the other guy was joking about with the paragraph of rules about hillbillies and no businesses and so on. While you have no problem living with those rules others may object to the same rules.

they have one of these going up in the suburbs of Chicago as well. Except for a small number of guys, this project is priced out of their range. I'd be interested to see what kind of demand is out there for something in between. Bare storage is around $100/mo. What would you pay for a spot that had some tools and equipment to share? When I was stationed at Wright Patt there was a garage on base with bays, lifts etc that you could drive in and use whenever you wanted as long as there was a spot. You had to bring your own tools but it was part of being on the base. Insurance might kill you though.
