Interesting insulation install

I found this on a craigslist add as a rental garage that was insulated. I thought the method of insulating the walls looked different. looks to me they just put foam board direct over the purilings. Anyone do this?

Some people call it the poor mans spray foam.
But they need to tape or spray foam the seams to make an air seal.

well that foam isn't really cheap but i would bet like you the air would come in all the cracks.

A buddy is insulating his build with similar materials; NOT because it's cheap (it is not) but because he can do it a piece-at-a-time. He's spreading the cost over a couple of years, buying a piece or two as he can.

This is actually the correct way to insulate a building. It's done all the time in commercial construction (called "continuous insulation" or "CI.") It's typically done on the outside, but can obviously be installed on the inside. This effectively gets rid of the thermal bridging that spray foam may not (depending on thickness.)

Yes, the seams have to be sealed and probably need to be covered with something for protection. 2 layers with staggered seams is preferred. EPS, XPS, and Polyiso are the common insulation for this.

I did mine like that, 1.5 inch between the horizontal girts, then another .5 completely covering the girts and fist layer of foam. I then taped the seams and put 5/8" drywall over that. Much better than fiberglass in a 2x4 wall, IMO.

I have a metal sided house. We covered it with 1 inch foam sheets before attaching the metal. We then did cellulose in the walls. The insulation is awesome. Our utility bills are VERY low.

Slightly different from what you posted but still same basic concept.
