Think like a thief they are quick and easy typically. So hitting that lock with a BFH like the 1 star review indicates seems to quickly take it off.

Beyond a BFH, crow bar, or bolt cutters, they also resort to portable cut off tools, and portable bandsaws. If they want your trailer, they will likely get it, unless the wheels are off of it. IMO a boot is probably the best deterrent, although there are some thieves that will just drag it.

If a thief is well equipped he can solve most locks on trailers or anything else. A guy who is good with a pick can pick most locks also.

But these are crimes of opportunity, and if the thief has a choice of a trailer with no lock, and no need to make noise breaking a lock he will do it. The lock is really more of a message to the thief to find easier prey in most instances.

I don't know where you live, but if the thieves will drag a trailer with a boot on it, wow.

I have had a lot of Master locks and had pretty good success over the years.

I bought one of those for my boat trailer. It seems too loose for me and it would be easy to pry off or knock it off with a hammer or rock. I got one of these to replace it till I find a better one:

I got that in a combo kit with a hitch pin lock, and shackle lock for top of hitch (all keyed the same). All deterents, as nothing is 100% secure. I got a nice Reese forged hitch, and stainless steel ball, and seems to catch a lot of eyes. I don't worry with the locked pin on it, sonit stays in all the time.

One note, I probably wouldnt have any of this had I not got them 75% off at HD a couple years back.

All trailer locks **** these days. There are just way to many options to circumvent anything on the market. Be it power tools or easy access to picking equipment and videos on youtube showing you exactly how to do it. All you can do is hope that they don't happen to have the right tool, or there is enough traffic in the area that they're afraid to make a bunch of noise or getting seen by someone.

Both Bosnian Bill and Lock Picking Lawyer have a number of hitch lock reviews on YT. Master Lock in general uses poorly made cores that are trivial to pick with low-skill attacks and frequently the lock bodies are subject to bypasses like shimming that require zero skill.

I don't know if PacLock or Abus makes hitch locks, but those would be the first brands I would look at. Even if they don't, you can weld up a hitch lock body from square tubing and use a PacLock or Abus puck or shutter lock to secure it.
