Interesting Mac ratchet set

Picked up an interesting MAC set today, a 2004 gold plated set of 3/8 and 1/4" Zero ratchets. Head size is decently compact, but definitely thick. Not sure what to do with them, I got them cheap enough that I could just use them....not sure there is much demand for "collector" MAC tools.

Unfortunately you would find you got them cheap because the ratchets were terrible. When they worked it was great but this wasnt the case. I think Mac stopped selling them for this reason.

I like the look of the handles, overall they look like compact ratchets.

I’ve never been a collector, if I was in your shoes I would likely use them.

it's just to bad they are #2276 of 3000.

If my birthday was 2/2/76, I'd be all over that set, and you'd never have to work another day in your life if my check cleared.

Unfortunately, that's not going to happen.

Now you just have to find that person that has the birthday of 2/2/76, and who loves collector edition Mac tools, and you will be set...... look on it as a life goal.

I myself have considered buying some gold collectors edition extensions because they seem to sell for less than their regular chrome counterparts. I would use them if you have a need. I have no experience with that style of Mac Ratchet.

I think this is the 1st gold set I've seen in the wild, and definitely have never come across a "Zero" ratchet. I have the Lowe's/Kobalt version, but the head is a lot bigger in diameter. The movement is pretty good in the Zero, only real issue is the direction selectors on both are pretty stiff. Not sure if this was inherent to the design, or if they simply need to be lubed.

They ****. I've got one that I bought from the truck about then. The direction changing sucked, so I made the pusher change it out for a new one, which wasn't any better. It's a bit easier if you use two hands, with one hand holding the socket, and the other turning the switch. I've still got it, but I never use it. From time to time, it's saved my **** where there's a really crappy clearance.
the rest of the time, it sits in the drawer, and I look at and I am glad I didn't buy the kit.


They're not actually ratchets -- they have roller clutches, which is why they have zero backlash. They have a reputation for failing under heavy load. I've never had a problem, but it's a fairly short handled socket wrench...
