Cool winch. I have a 5 ton Beebe I've had for near 50 years. (It's 500 miles away though so no pics) The 5 ton has a drive gear in the centre of the drum for hi-speed or pop the drive gear out and slide it into the outer drive position on the gear on the outside of the drum (like yours) for heavy loads.
You could put a chain sprocket on it and power it with an electric motor. I.m not sure how your brake works though. If you hook the end of the line to where you mount the winch and add a travelling pulley on the line I'm sure you could lift 1200 lbs with it. It's way more solid than the chi come-a -longs rated at 2000 lbs.

By its very nature, it's pretty much self braking. Very hard for that gear to turn the worm.
You should be able to free wheel the drum to get the cable out in a timely manner. A spur that ratchets along the gear teeth would be simplest brake. Does it make a ratchet sound? Have you taken the crank handle off?

I could be wrong, but I'm not seeing any way to disengage the worm.

Beebe bros stuff is top notch. I am always keeping my eye out for them. I use a 3 ton Beebe bros lever hoist all the time, it was well worth the investment. I have seen a 2 ton, and a 5 ton winch, but haven't seen that small 600lb cap. model before. Nice score.

The cable looks like the same stuff used on helicopter rescue hoists. The normal WL on the hoist is 600Lbs with proper cable swages.
