Interesting Pliers

[MC1983]

Found these cornwell pliers at the flea market. Haven't seen a pair like them before. Just wondering what they are used for and hold old they might be. Only markings on the tool other than the brand are the two characters on the arm.

I have seen that style from other brands. Always described as battery terminal pliers, though I do not know how their unique design is specifically suited to that kind of work.

I think it's because the opening is set to fit the old battery terminal nuts, the handles are not squeezed to close together or too far apart if that makes any sense.

What a coincidence. I bought this Williams battery pliers this morning at a flea market.

They're battery pliers. The short serrated jaws were meant to remove badly corroded battery terminal nuts. Nuts that were so corroded, you couldn't use a wrench or socket on. The jaws were short and narrow to grips the remains of the nut better. made by everybody to this day.

Yep they are very good for chalked up terminals with acid gunk on them.

Keep a baggie with bicarbonate of soda in it, just rub the pliers into the baggie to clean and neutralize the acid. Wipe with a throw-away rag and you will have a good set of pliers until someone steals them.

Same treatment goes for the terminals and battery top. Batteries have a critical-mass-stage where one day they are a-ok and the next day the terminals are fouled up with acid chalk.

Keeping battery pliers, bicarbonate and 200 grit emery cloth in the trunk can save you from needing a jump. If you grind down one handle of the battery pliers flat it easily lifts the terminals to get them clean.

Yup, I love my Snappy BCP208's. In addition to battery terminals, they are AWESOME for crimping on T-taps;

They close just enough to get a solid close on the connector, without smashing the bejesus out of them, plus since the pivot is so far forward, you can "load" the connector in the jaws and install a tap one handed. Those pliers saved me HOURS of work back in my remote start days.

I've got a pair of them. I find I use them for a lot more than just terminals.
