Interesting ratchet find

I bought this at a yard sale over the weekend - a 1/2" drive KANE pat. pend. 2070 ratchet.

I have never heard of this brand, and I couldn't find anything about it other than an identical ratchet on Worthpoint. http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vintage-kane-ratchet-socket-pat-pend-117867486

It is not stamped USA, so maybe it is offshore? It is well-made, has nice, crisp ratcheting action, (didn't count the teeth) and an interesting ratchet mechanism. Never seen a mechanism like it, though I'm no expert. The mechanism is held in by a screw in the front, and a snap ring on the back. I was afraid to pop the snap ring off and take the guts out.

Anyone know anything about this ratchet or the company?

That looks similar to a ratchet Crescent made back in the day. At least the mechanism not the handle.
Please pay no attention to the brass screw I put that in as a replacement because the old screw was rusty and stripped.

Guess the possibility of finding a rebuild kit is zero to nil.
Then again, from the looks of the parts, me thinks they won't wear out anytime this century.

I wish I could remember what the pat# was.
I do remember the Crescent ads I'd seen featuring them were from the "Crescent tools give wings to work" era. Late 50's early 60's.

The Wright patent # is 2715955 dated 23 Aug 1955 by A.P. Stone (filed for in 1950).

No info on the Kane.

Hi all, I might be picking up on an old thread here- but I own the very same ratchet- same size, same markings.
The interesting bit is I also have a set of imperial sockets from the same manufacturer.
I believe the 2070 is not a patent number, but a sequential parts number- 2070 being the part number for the 1/2"reversible ratchet and the sockets are marked with their own 20** number for each size. eg: the 1-1/8"socket is numbered 2036 and the 7/16"is numbered 2014.
Not sure if the 20 refers to the 1/2" line of tools, or imperial sizing?

Very little information is available on the www for this manufacturer, I am not sure where they were made or who made them, have been told possibly Canadian, but I have no proof.
Where ever they originated from, they are extremely well made, well finished and have a real solid heft to them. They are as good as most anything you might find being made today and a darn sight better than most being offered.

They were made by SK. Not many of them pop up here in the states, so pretty interesting you have a set down under. Gotta get us some pics, we love pics!

Agreed, so perhaps the 2070 applies to the patent and then the 20** was carried into the product range as a part number code?
They would hardly apply for a new patent for each socket....... would they?

The cited patent was assigned to S-K, and the narrow band of knurling on the sockets is reminiscent of theirs, so I'd have to agree the mfr is probably S-K in the USA. Folks were still a little sensitive about COO with WW2 still fresh in most minds, so I think the trade laws requiring imports to be marked with the COO were strictly enforced at the time. Most likely made under contract for a private brand. Studying the tools very closely, it appears as if the KANE stamping is a slightly different quality to the other stampings on the tools, as if S-K would stamp any potential contract customer's mark there while the other marks would have been factory standard. Even some very small store chains had their own house-branded tools in the day. Now all we have to do is to find a period ad for this brand.

Period ad will be harder to find here than other Kane branded tools I would imagine, I will leave that up to members on the other side of the Pacific.

Not sure if it is worth a mention, but there is no detent for the ratchet drive shaft ball bearing in the female coupling of the sockets.

They are- but the SK look to be a bit further finished, bright chrome versus satin unpolished.

The stamping of the fractional size numbers on the two brands look to be the identical font and dimension. Given the physical evidence + the patent assignee, I think there's little doubt they were made by S-K.
