Hi everyone! This is my first post. I'm 15 and love anything mechanical or electrical, especially old motors and stuff.

I found something interesting today! I'm trying to figure out what the heck it is! Anyways, me and my grandpa went to an estate sale today, and picked up this really heavy (at least 60 pounds) cast iron thing with a steel base. At first, we thought it was a motor by how it looked. But when we looked at it closer, it resembled a pump, since it had a pulley on it but no electrical connections. But it also didn't look like a pump, since there are no in/out lines. The guy gave it to us for nothing. We took it for scrap value to give to my cousin's father, who is a scrapper.
We are thinking it is some kind of transmission, or gearbox. It has a half inch keyed shaft, that has the pulley on it. So something drove it from here. The final output shaft has a square shaped drive on it. Stamped in it reads: PATENTED 1940 - SEARS, ROEBUCK AND CO. USA and underneath that are some patent numbers. I don't have it with me, but I hope to go back and get the patent numbers off of it. It is real heavy duty, and has an oil fill reservoir in the side, almost like for crankcase oil for an engine. Someone made a steel base for it, and bolted it to the original mounting holes. I'm just curious to know what it is! I can't seem to find a picture of it, because I don't know what you would call it. I tried looking up 1940 and Sears patents, but haven't found it. My grandpa was thinking it might of been some sort of drive for a machine for a tractor or something, but not sure. But I am guessing the main pulley shaft that is driven by a motor is linked to the square drive shaft and is some kind of a gearbox or transmission for some machine. I don't have any photos right now. Anyone have any idea of what this may be? Or at least lead me in the right direction? Thanks!!

Maybe a flux capacitor, having pics would help nail down which series ;-)

Whatever it is we need pictures. But DO NOT scrap it until it is identified. To much finds its way to scrap and it is a one way street.
