It's called a Magnum Ultrasocket

Never seen this one before. It came in a bunch of sockets I bought.

It reminds me of a cross between the Channelock adjustable socket that works kind of like a drill chuck, and the old Craftsman adjustable nut driver.

3/8 drive

Surprising when I saw Made in USA on it.

Just because something can be made, doesn't mean it should:willy_nil

That would go on my wall of oddities and I would enjoy the conversations it would start, but I doubt I would ever use it.

Thanks for posting it, I love oddball ****.

I believe it's from Christmas season 1982.

To eliminate the need for a whole set of socket wrenches, Magnum Industries Inc., P.O. Box 40386, Cleveland, Ohio 44140, has developed a socket that adjusts to fit all popular-size nuts and bolts, in both metric and nonmetric sizes. It goes from five-sixteenths to fiveeighths of an inch in standard sizes, and from 8 to 16 millimeters in metric sizes.

Called the Ultra-Socket and carrying a suggested price of $29.95, it is made of chrome-molybdenum tool steel and fits all standard three-eighths-inch drive ratchets and socket wrench handles. The socket is placed over the nut or bolt head, and then a knurled collar at the top is turned until three jaws inside the socket close snugly over the fastener; it will then grip like a regular socket wrench.

The manufacturer asserts that it will outperform a standard socket on bolts that are rusted or have slightly rounded heads. All-Purpose Ratchet Handle

I have to agree Fill, another gimmicky piece. Should have posted it on Father's Day for some chuckles.

I'd love to see your wall of oddities! I enjoy that stuff and have assembled a bunch myself. It's fun to share them here.

HA HA, thanks! I found that link when googling around and didn't scroll down beyond that weird picture! Nothing else really popped up on the web but that article is awesome!

Geez, I haven’t been on here in years and am resurrecting an ancient post at that. I was searching around for unusual gimmick tools and came across this post.

I have one of these Magnum Ultra Sockets. I picked it up on eBay for like $3 years ago new in the box. I never actually used it but remember reading the patent and it was interesting enough how it worked. If anyone is remotely interested I have the instructions that came with it and can take a pic.

Box is just a plain brown sleeve. Here are the instructions. Socket is otherwise the same as the one pictured above.

The guy that invented this also appears to have invented the socket ratchet system like the Craftsman Max Axess

Custom made for the Garage Journal keyboard jockeys. The premise goes like this: A 12 point socket has too little engagement, and won't work on ordinary nuts. So, 6 point must be used. Go one step further with a bit of Garage Journal overkill, and presto, the 3 point socket is invented!

Lol, I’ve come to own a lot of gimmick tools from Sears, Lowe’s and such over time. Most are mostly useless, some workmfor some purposes. This one’s a bit strange.

The only one of these gimmick tools I’d ever recommend is Metrinch those actually work quite well.
