Interior finishing out .... 40x60

Hey guys. Here's some photos of the inside of my 40x60.



Electrical is to the building via underground from house. I ran beefy aluminum cable that is rated at 200 amps at the building



Decided against spray foam and went with traditional framing, 24" apart. R19 by far was the best deal. Got R19 for all 4 walls (12' height) and it was like $750 home depot bulk deal.



Going to put up white metal walls and ceiling and do at least 12" of cellulose blown in ceiling. I will do electricity after the walls and ceiling are up. So i can run everything in attic and just drop down pipe along the wall. That way electricity is all on the outside of the wall and can easily be messed with.



Got a 125k BTU REZNOR propane heater. Hanging that soon. And then LED shop lights.



I will update as changes happen. Here's what I got so far. And please dont hesitate to comment good, bad, or ugly.

I bought a Reznor V3 heater unit already. Probably hang it this week or beginning of next week. Propane conversion kit. And ill prob just buy a 100 gal tank to sit outside. Not sure how much propane Ill use just keeping it at 40deg when not in use in winter time.

Nothing for AC. Im gonna get 2 9ft fans for the ceiling though will help circulate heat in cold temps and of course be adequate for summer.

Reznor heater I got from totalhomesupply.com those guys are awesome. Very knowledgeable. Not pushy at all. Really helpful choosing correct size for your cubic feet. Free shipping. Best overall deal out of anywhere I could find. These are the best units and have the best efficiency rating. And quiet. Modine is another brand that is very good. But they are shaped noticeably taller so hanging from ceiling it will hang lower than the reznor. And people complain that the Modine are a little noisy compared to reznor

I did end up getting the 125k BTU which is overkill as per reznors calculations. my cubic measurements are 40x60x12. My insulation is considered "good". And the calculation called for 80k BTU when outside temp is zero and I wanted it at 70. hahhaa. So its never zero in MD, and I'll never want it at 70deg or even close. But the 100k unit was like $50 cheaper, so I went with the 125k unit. The issue with getting one that TOO powerful is that it will turn on and off too quickly. That can cause issues with the unit and condensation on parts not having enough heat go through them to evaporate. But I didnt care

Who cares. I'll do at leat 12" maybe 14" of that in attic. Ill install a light or two up there to see. and Prob a circulation fan. I do have sofit and ridge vent system but fan can help in summer

Just so you know, cellulose does and will burn. It might be somewhat resistant, but it will smolder and catch what's next to it on fire.

That being said, there are millions of people that are using it and are very happy with it.

The sheets for the ceiling are 20' long by 3'. So handling them is a real *****. My guy that does a lot of work for me is real clean and meticulous and has his dad help him. These guys get stuff done! Plus they have a lift contraption and do these regularly. Screws are laser straight.

As with anything, its always a matter of time V money. I've got more money than time to make a long story short. I dont have tons of money, but I have less time than I do money, so that's why I have someone do a job for me. Whether its this job, or buying overhead lights online at sams club VS driving to the sams club store.

JC, I believe you are thinking aluminum NM...like romex. yes, that's gone.

Alot of what is used for service entrances is aluminum.

That's an interesting question. If the interior vapor barrier is good there should be very little moisture migration out from the interior, the usual source of sweating. Very little moisture should work it's way inside the metal after the building is up. There has to be a supply of moisture to create the sweating.

A lot of guys think acetylene sweats moisture out of steel. It is really the products of combustion of the flame condensing on the cold steel. When you look at the bottom of a plate being heated with a torch it is not sweating. Point being, the moisture has to come from the air to sweat on steel.

That looks amazing. Mirrors the future plans of my shed. I have to ask, because I don't know, what's the purpose of running the furring strips on the bottom of the trusses vs. running the tin 90*, screwed directly to the trusses?

I'm guessing the trusses are too far apart so that's probably the reason for the furring strips. Plus, it's easier to screw to 3.5 inches than 1.5 inches.

My building is almost identical at 42x64. Ceiling is done and blown with cellulose to R50. I have my walls yet to do. Was planning the same as you but was contemplating 1/2" XPS first to act as a vapor barrier, then the R19 unfaced fiberglass.

Can I ask the brand of light you used?

The ceiling fans are home depot. Freakin $219ea. Work great. Have remotes and everything. Lifetime warranty. I looked at tons of fans but for $200 and lifetime warranty, You cant beat it. I only wanted fans for circulating air a bit. That's it. These do it perfectly.

Metal ceiling liner is typically between 80 cents to $1.05 per square foot depending on style and quantity ordered.

That is fantastic value for lights and fan. I wish I saw those Home Depot fans before I purchased my unit. I got a quote for a "Big *** Fan" High Velocity, Low Speed fan and I almost had a heart attack.

Yes. Online they are in 2pk. But I went to the SAMs store the other day and they sell them in store now in singles. Basically $30 for one fixture. So prices online VS in store is basically the same. They didn't use to carry in store. Online they charge tax and shipping. They are good lights. On my 40x60 ceiling I have 24 units. 12' ceiling. Light up the floor very well

They move quite a bit more cfm of air at a much lower speed, you hardly notice it is on.

'Big *** Fans' are no question a better fan. To me personally, I only wanted fans for asthetics and to move a little air around. Mostly the heat in winter. little bit in summer and im good. So these LIFETIME warranty home depot ones for $200 were the right choice for me. Thats just insanely cheap for a fan like this. They are aluminum blade, very quiet, remote control, etc etc. awesome looking

Yes the 'Big *** Fans' move more cfm etc etc etc. I would just add one more of the home depot fans if i need more air haha

I put a white metal ceiling in my last shop and i loved it! I was afraid of also doing metal on the walls because of how loud it would be in there when i was grinding or hammering or whatever. -sound bouncing around. Have you done any of that sort of thing yet that you could weigh in on?

Metal is the way to go. The entire metal interior ceiling included, cost me $2300. Including the 2 million screws you need. Installs very easily. Already painted, no sanding, no mudding, taping, lifting heavy drywall etc etc. and if I want to clean out the place, just hose down the walls and you're good.

The sound never crossed my mind really. The metal pieces are really "dead" sounding when you tap on them because they are secured with tons of screws straight to wood on other side. So it doesn't have that "tin-ey" metal sound like you might think. Haven't used a grinder or anything yet. Hammering is a non-issue. But grinders, table saw, shop vac, even saws-all ... I'll use ear protection. But I'm very conscious of loud noises anyways, so I always use earplugs regardless of whether I'm inside or outside. I've got several different styles and sets. So I'm always protecting my hearing. Even if I was grinding something outside where there's no echo, I'm still using protection. I ride motorcycles and ride my tractor with plugs too. Hell, I even cover my ears at work when I crank up the compressor in the morning before I get out of the compressor room. And I'm 34yrs old so it's not like I'm some weird old dude w un-necessary fears. It's a real thing. Protect your ears man.
