I have read many many posts and possibly more confused now than before. So I will post my questions and hopefully I can get a clearer direction.

I'm in the pre-concrete pour of my shop, but want everything laid out before I get started. I'm building a 32x45 with 12' walls and 6/12 scissor trusses (4/12 inside). I want to something durable on the walls, prefer not to use sheetrock, but want something that is durable but will finish out nice. I was initially thinking about plywood, then leaning towards OSB. OSB would eliminate the knots and offer a consistent finish. My concern, after using a sealer and then paint, can you still see the "grain" of the OSB? If so, does anyone have pics of OSB painted white or other light color?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Puget,

What are you calling textured exterior plywood? Something like T-111 or is there something else???

OSB paints and looks fine. It will never be mistaken for finished drywall, but still can look great for a shop. If you're doing things right in the shop, your projects will capture your attention, not the slight texture of oSB.

Does anyone have a picture of OSB painted? What I have read says to paint it with an oil based paint. This would be a PITA...T-111 is looking pretty good right now!!!

It all depends on your personal taste. I think osb painted looks fine, gives a bit of texture. T-111 has grooves cut deeper which will break up the surface every 8". This may be an inconvenience depending on the application.

Bite the bullet and get tongue and groove subfloor. I did 3/4" T&G from Menards (it was only slightly higher than their 1/2" non-T&G) and it had great faces on both sides. Cost a little more on the front end, but with a small amount of water putty and a good prime and paint and they look great.

Plus, you can hang pretty much anything, anywhere you want.

I have T-111 in my garage. I left it unfinished. It looks okay but a couple of my friends have had some issues after spending some time out there. One of my friends gets all stuffed up if the doors are closed. The other gets a headache and he starts to cough after being out there for a couple of hours. I think theyre allergic to the pine. The shops clean. Im out there all the time and never a problem.
I plan on painting the inside this fall. The ceiling is drywall and painted white already. I'll probably do the walls in a semi gloss white to seal it all up. Im sure its going to **** up a ton of paint.

I'm just getting ready to start putting up 3/8" 4x10' LP SmartSide T1-11 primed panels in my 30x30x10 today. I bought them at a Menards 11% sale http://www.menards.com/main/building-materials/siding/engineered-wood-siding/panel/3-8-x-4-x-10-lp-reg-smartside-reg-grooved-8-oc-strand-panel/p-1707829-c-5829.htm

The garage already has InsoFast 2" foam panels on the block walls, so there is a solid backing throughout and plastic studs @16" OC. The plan is to use a french cleat hanging system around most of the perimeter so hopefully this should work out well.

That's under direct light. Put my hand up there for a reference point as the to size of everything. Some spots look better than that, some look worse, but that's a good overall idea of how mine came out.

Another vote for t-111, the wife and I did a 24 x 36 garage with 10' ceilings on a Saturday. Trimmed and painted on Sunday

Gentlemen,

Thank you for all the great feedback. This gives me a lot to think about! Once I get all my concrete quotes and select a contractor, I'll set up a garage build thread and keep everyone up to date on the progress.

Thanks again,
Mark
