I have completed a 36’ x 48’ shop, except for the interior. Of everything to consider when building this shop I have fretted over what to use for the interior walls the most. I do not want drywall, so some sort of paneling would have been the obvious choice; however, I have found a good deal on 1” x 8” x 12’ rough sawn pine, kiln dried.

To avoid additional framing and waste I’ve decided to install the planks horizontally. My intentions are to put up insulation, then black felt and then the planks. My question is this…would it be better to stagger the joints randomly and leave them be, or make sure the joints fall at 4’ intervals and install a vertical batten every 4’? Oh, the ceiling is 10’.

I like the staggered look. Plus, staggering provides rigidity.

I'd skip the black felt, maybe use poly for a vapor barrier, but that's just me.
