Order of preference is separate boxes, then separate drawers, then left and right side of the drawers to segregate SAE from Metric.

Avoid mixing at all costs.

It’s pretty easy, by observation and logic, and, in some case, exper, to determine if you need to pull out the metric or SAE tools.

The joker is the mixed fasteners on a project.

I like overkill where it makes a difference.
My work kit is not that place.

17 sockets for 8-22mm including SAE fit ins
15 wrenches for 6-28mm plus useful SAE fit ins.

It is what works well in late model auto work. I have other options reserved but rarely need them. This is the 95% part of my work and it probably cost less than the boots some of you wear.
A war era socket tin only 3×8" instead of full width drawers with Hansen trays? Yes. I can do my job with only that most days. Bigger stuff I get the shops mix and match halfer set. About twice a week.

If you look hard at your tools the ones eith dirt and wear are your core set. I will bet its the stuff on top of your cart or left on the bench too. It may be but a small fraction of what you hold too. Mine sure was. No judgement here. Just my way of being honest about how I work. Your manner should be different.
