internet radio for garage - how to ?

I am addicted to interner radiot (live 365 stations) and would like some ideas how to get it setup in my garage inexpensively.

I'm sick of juggling and ruining all my cd's and messing around with a Ipod all the time

I do alot of painting and fab work so having a PC in there and actually hearing it isn't feasable.

I looked at this - a squeezebox - but I think the sound would be seriously lacking.

I am a musician so I actually have a pretty good system setup for a garage - yamaha amp - cd changer - 4 - 3 way speakers with metal horns and 15" woofers.

I like it loud..

I'm not real up on technology so any ideas are appreciated !

Easiest thing to me would be to take an old laptop and put it inside a cabinet in the garage . I have a laptop and an LCD TV out here and also do alot of Metal Fab and painting and have never had an issue.

Cheapest would be to grab an old computer and feed the audio into your stereo. If you have a TV as well you can go with a Western Digital Live Player, had digital audio and hdmi out, music streamed from Pandora is very clean.

I believe the squeeze box is like $300, the WD Live is $99. An old computer might be cheaper.

When I am in the garage I plug my notebook into the stereo to stream.

Is the garage attached to the house? If not, how far away is it from the house? Is it close enough that you could simply run an output cable from the computer to the amp in the garage?

There are plenty of wireless audio solutions out there...put a transmitter on your PC and a receiver on your amp and you should be set. That said, I don't know how the quality is on the lower-priced systems (assuming you're not trying to spend a bundle). The range will have to work with your home/garage setup as well.

Purchase a WDTV Live (it has Live 365), and use that for the streaming audio... they run $99. Way cheaper than an ipad, or laptop. You will need a tv to use it though, but its gotta be the cheapest/easiest solution.

I listen to the Dish Network SIRIUS music channels through there 722VIP DVR into my Sony Surround. It has 60 channels of commercial free channels plus you can record favorite songs to the DVR. Hell they even have a 24/7 Elvis channel (6013) if that's your thing lol YMMV

I got transmitters, their called baluns, off eBay. One plugs into your pc one, one in the stereo. Then you run Cat 5 phone cable between. Think they have 1000 ft range.

Like everyone else said, there are many different ways to get it done, just deponds on how easy you want it to be and how much you want to spend. I am not sure why you think the Squeezbox's will not work for you, they have many differnet versions. The Touch and Duet will both connect to your existing system via RCA's. If you have a smart phone (IPhone, Android, Windows Mobile, Blackberry) you could get an adapter and hook it up via RCA's, and stream from Live365 or many of the other sites or even you phone provider.

1. Old Laptop (if you have one or from ebay) with Wifi, connected to house Wifi, and connected to your audio system you already have.
2. Android, iPhone, Blackberry, Windows Phone......running an app connected to your audio system.
3. Squeezebox, Western Digital Live Player, etc.

So if you have a setup like that in the garage now, why not have a computer in there or are you just saying that you wouldn't be able to hear it, or that fabbing work and dirt would kill the PC?

sorry..should have been more detailed - my pole barn is 500 ft from my home..was advised to avoid wireless due to the metal construction.

It's a working garage, not a hang out and chat garage so I didn't want to have a bunch of money ******* in sensitive equipment. It tends to get ruined.

Either the WDTV or the transmitters look to be the best option for me.

Best toy EVER! Not the cheapest but it's the one I enjoy the most.

Use an old PC/laptop, connected to the internet. Lots of free internet radio available. You can also convert all your music to MP3's on the computer.

I can't speak for the Squeezebox Radio, but I just got a Squeezebox Boom for a bedroom, and was very impressed with the sound quality. It might not fill a 60'x100'x14' shop with sound, but it's great for a smaller room.

But since you already have a receiver in the garage, get the original Squeezebox (if you can find one), or a Touch or Duet, and hook it up to your receiver. You'll wish you had done it years ago.
