Hey everyone.

I came upon this site thanks to VWVortex and The Car Lounge. They had a thread about a guys DIY Ikea Garage. He goes by Jack Olsen on there. I go by dodger21 but that's an old gamer tag I had.

A little about me. I have worked in a factory for the last 6.5 years. I went from production worker and nearly 2 years ago got moved up to facility maintenance. I know the boss outside of work so that helped. I do everything from PM'ing the 4 air compressors, 3 vacuum pumps and the 1956 boiler to assisting contractors on renovations to electrical to wood working. They hired me for a jack-of-all position but my boss has recognized (his words) that I have better potential.

I have a lovely bride and tomorrow, a beautiful 1 year old girl. You'll see I talk about them a lot too.

I just recently bought a house (3 weeks ago) and with it came a detached 2 car garage with a 8x20 wood shop in the back. There is just a couple problems with it.

It is currently fed with a single phase 30a circuit. Luckily I found some old paperwork. Garage was built in 1984 and the buried a 1" conduit to run the wires through. I will see about upgrading the house to a 200a panel and feeding the garage with the old 100a panel. The whole garage needs rewiring.

The garage door is only 6' tall. Cant get my 01 2500 Suburban in there... My wife's uncle is an engineer for Raynor. I'm thinking about pulling some strings.

The side door has sagged and now won't close properly.

Anyways, I am looking for ideas and I like helping others.

Eventually this is going to house the Suburban and my project car that I want to buy. My beater, 94 Accord with 238k, stays outside.

Pics!

Good thing you know about wiring because it looks like you have a lot to do. Nice garage and shop for a first house.

Are those glass fuses in the electrical box? I haven't seen those in a long time?

Welcome to the GJ! congrats on the new house. This is a great place for ideas. Sounds like you really got your stuff together. Keep us up dated

PS I really like the suburban. Very nice vehicle.

My '04

Love mine! Bought it to tow my truck (92 Cummins) to the track. However that truck got caught in my parents barn fire. 8.1L LT with Autoride. Consistently 11.5 mpg. A/C or not, city or highway, 55mph or 80mph.

Yes sir. The guy was an awesome wood worker but he was definitely not an electrician. House is done well but the garage must have been his place.

Been awhile so I'll update. No photos. Thanks to my position, I am acquiring 3 file cabinets, any dense counter top from modular desktops that I want ranging from 6ft long to 2ft long and a couple corner pieces, 3 overhead file cabinets, and 2 sets of parabolic lights, 1 3 bulb single ballast and 1 2 bulb single ballast. I've also got a solid wood desktop measuring 32x48 I believe. The desktop is going to be turned into a mobile workstation.

Also got 90% of my stuff from my in-laws and all my tools. I'm missing my cordless impact charger... I want it for a brake job on my Honda. Make life easier.

Do to the holidays, weather, DRs appointments for my ear, shoveling snow, car accident, snow, buying a new car, snow, work, the fire department, snow... nothing has gotten done.

I did score this today. Looks similar to a 34-600 bit Idk. 9" table saw and 4" jointer.

The saw cuts NICE. The previous owner said he's had it for 20 years and remodeled 3 homes with it. His home was beautiful so he seems to know what he's doing. In that time he's never used the jointer.

Good score! My father in law has a table-saw (craftsman) of a similar vintage - must be 1940s? An all steel, belt driven saw is what I hope to eventually upgrade to. My (I'm hesitant to even say this) ryobi table saw has served me well, but there's so much slop in the fence, I have a designated framing squre just to check it. They don't build things like they used to...

Got some more cleaning done and was able to lay it out. This weekend I'm going to raise the counter height to 36". Got to build a stand under each file cabinet.

Got some more of the garage cleaned and needed to do the rear main seal in my truck. So I thought it was too tall. I figured I could back in the truck to get out of the rain if it started like they predicted. So I back in and check to see if I was close. One thing led to another and this is the end result:

So much nicer than working in the driveway. Now to lower the truck so I can jack it up. Hehe
