Hi,

I originally posted this content yesterday in the General Garage Discussion forum, but now think it would have been better to post here. So that is what I have done.

New member. Lurked for a while. In the process, have been just amazed at the amount of incredibly interesting and helpful material I have found. Great forum.

I in the process of working with an architect to have a new home designed. Having grown up on a farm I am used to having a lot of space for working on and storing cars. Life, however, has led me away from the farm and the long desired custom home is going to be built in the city. Fortunately, my wife has allowed herself to be persuaded that it is appropriate the home have two garages: 24x24 standard two car garage and... my 14x28 (or 30) workshop garage. Thought not the same as a big old drive shed, the workshop garage should suffice for my purposes. I was particularly inspired to figure out how to make that smaller space work after seeing the very impressive work Jack Olsen has done in his 12-Guage Garage.

We are in the design phase now. I expect as we go forward there will be matters that arise where I will be turning to this forum for advice. From what I have seen so far, I expect I will be in good hands.

The first thing I am hoping for some input about is a lift. I like to do simple work on my cars - oil changes, brake and suspension work, spark plugs - as well as detail them. I wish to have the ability, however, if need be to drop a motor or transmission, most likely out of a rear or mid-engined car. I have researched two post lifts, four post lifts and the BendPak SP-7X scissor lift. The research includes combing this site and various car enthusiast sites. I am pretty much decided on a SP-7X recessed into the garage floor. After seeing it in the video's posted by BHR4CE1, I was really quite taken by the lift and that slick install. Second choice would be a 4 post with a bridge jack or two. What appeals to me about the SP-7X over the 4 post is: the ease of use - drive on, set the blocks and send her up; easier and better access to the car when it is up in the air; no posts to walk around, which will line up with the modern, uncluttered look that I am striving to achieve.

About the only two advantages I see for the 4 post would be cost and storage. I am willing to accept the price difference. As for storage, should I need it, I can put a 4 post in the 24x24 some day down the road.

So at this stage, I am hoping for advice about two things: First, I am missing anything in leaning towards the SP-7X? Second, for anyone who has had the SP-7X for a while now, any regrets?

Thanks.

Mark

It is a little narrow. I would like it to be wider. But it is the most that I can reasonably afford to build given financial and lot size considerations. I did measure with both doors wide open the width of the car I expect will spend the most time in there and 14 feet will do with still a little bit of room for me to wriggle by when needed. The need to be able to wriggle by will be just a further incentive to me to keep hitting the gym!
