Introducing myself and my plan

Hi all -

after nearly twenty years of hoarding cars and parts, I finally have the space and money (hopefully) to build my dream garage.

Dream garage is probably overstating it, actually, since all I really want is a load of bays, a lift, and plenty of room to build projects. Not so much into decor, wet bars, plasma TV and video games... that's beautiful and all, but I've got cars to build, dammit!

Here's what I've worked up so far. 960sf addition, 35w in front, 51w in back, 22.5d, and 11-12 clearance over the center bay.

Let me know what you think, and any details I might be overlooking.

That looks like it will be a nice space. Do you have/want height for a lift? Even if it that isn't in the budget now might be something to think about (for when you get that winning lottery ticket...).

Eric - there's roughly 12' clearance in the middle bay, so that should be my lift headroom... definitely putting one in from the get-go. In fact, I'm already putting off jobs that will be sooooo much simpler with a lift.

We have six cars: 62 Tbird, 72 240Z, 67 VW T3, 96 M3, 97 Volvo wagon, 84 MBZ 300D. I really want to be out of the weather, wife especially. With five cars in five bays, I can put a little roulette wheel in to choose which car to drive! Nothing blocking anything else in, nothing covered in condensation or ice, ahhh, sounds good, huh?

Plus, getting the T3 (serious project bucket) and M3 into covered spaces will let me get them on my Hagerty policy, saving serious coin on insurance. 'Course, it'll only take about 80 years of insurance savings to pay for the shop!

Update! After a year of planning, septic work, plan revision, permitting, estimating, plan revision, permitting, and hand wringing over whether I can really justify spending $OMG on a place for my toys... breaking ground this week:




12' framing, 2' cut, ridge on new garage 1' above old, angled to lot line, 970sf +/-. New garage doors all around should help tie it together. Hoping to put a storage loft above the left side of the garage. Already have a lift (and maybe an industrial compressor) lined up.

Been a long saga, but now that it appears this is finally gonna happen, guess I'll have to start lurking again... cabinetry, air, power,

//edit - funny, rereading this thread, the Tbird and VW are gone, since replaced with a 67 Skylark convertible and a 59 Volvo PV544.

They broke ground, did some soil analysis, and declared it too wet to build (go figure, been a wet winter here). So it's been pushed back until May or June.
