Introduction and a Welding Table

Hello, long time lurker. I've been working on my first welding table and figured I should share. The top came from a local scrap yard, it is 30" x 50" x 3/8" plate. The owner said it was a floor panel for a news paper printer. One side was textured for slip prevention and caked in layers of ink and crud. The bottom was nice though, and after a little wire wheel treatment, perfect for a work surface.

I learned how to weld during my senior design project for my BS in mechanical engineering, and since then, been welding at home with a Northern Tool ST80i. I finally upgraded to the 2016 AlphaTig 200x, and with a new welder, comes a new cart.

The legs are 2.5" OD round tube and the rest of the frame is 2" x 2" x .120" square tube. With the base plate and casters, the top height comes to about 41". I am 6'-2" so that is perfect standing height for me, and I have a high drafters chair for those times I want to sit down.

I started out coping the square tube with just my grinder, but after my first few tig welds in years, it was apparent I needed much closer fitment. After buying the correct size hole saw and rigging up a jig on the temporary welding table (plate on wooden saw horses), I had much nicer joints and some nicer welds.

The last picture is of both sided welded up.

Here, I have the two sides connected and then the final frame assembly with caster plates and ground tab attached.

Since I do most of my work in half of my two car garage, everything needs to be stored in my side room for a car to park. The new welding table will live in front of my plywood and sheet stock, and the welder cart and the wooden table with the stainless steel top go under the laminate counter out of the way.

Another feature, borrowed from some of the great table that came before mine, power outlets. They plug into the wall using an old extension cord that met the business end of a hedge trimmer.

Finally I have fit up the top, though I still need to attach it. I am thinking a few stitch welds along the perimeter of the frame, hopefully without any warping.

Since that picture, I have added expanded metal to the bottom shelf. Moving forward I plan on adding drawers to store tig consumables and brackets to hold clamps and grinders. Ultimately, once I've used it for a while and optimized the configuration, I will add some paint.

Welcome aboard. I just bought an Alphatig 200x also. It compliments my Lincoln SP135 plus. That welding table looks nice. If you are concerned about containing sparks, consider taking the skin off an old washing machine or something similar. I did that for mine. It works very well for keeping things contained.
