"Invalid File"

When I go to manage photos and try to upload a photo I get this "invalid File" message.
Not sure how to correct this, any suggestions would be appreciated.

May be a problem with type of file your are trying to upload. What is the file extension? (3 letters after the .)

Hi Git,
thanks for responding. So the file is showing HEIC. Not sure when this changed unless my most recent Apple upgrade caused this. They used to show JPG when I was using iPhone6.
do you think this is the issue? If so, how can one change it back to JPG?
