I have the Invisible Fence system for my dog Max. It emits a frequency that triggers a receiver on his collar to give him a shock if he ventures past it and out of the yard. Works great. System went down over the weekend, the control module in the garage beeps when it senses a break in the line. Well, long story short, I couldn't find the break, had to call in the service guy. $100 later and the system is repaired. My wife said he had some kind of wand that made noise while he walked around the perimeter and stopped when he hit the break spot. Anyone have any ideas on what he was using and if I can get one or a variation of one to use for myself?

Break was an old splice I forgot I had made when planting a small tree several years ago. First thing I did was go right to the previous breaks I had repaired and checked those two spots, but I totally forgot about this one. Guy said it's common for old breaks that are "homowner" repaired to seperate around this time of year with moisture getting into the line causing corrosion. They repaired it with a waterproof connector. I had just spliced it back together and electrical taped it really well.

For a waterproof connection, try a few coats of liquid tape. Clean the joint and wire; bring each coat out a little farther from the splice than the last.Thanks for the link, looks promising!

Works very well. Max is our second dog on the IF system and he's totally trained. With system down for a couple of days we still let him out and he never crossed the boundry. Even got egged on by a couple walking their yappy lil' dog and he stayed in the yard. One of the best investments I've made. We're not allowed to have fences and the IF system allows me to not worry when I open the garage door because the it keeps Max within the front or rear yard area.

Do they make one that has some sort of transmitter and receiver you can aim at each other to make the boundry without having to bury a wire? My drive loops around the back of my house back to the road so we have 2 driveways I would have to try and get a wire under. Our dog runs out in the road all the time and we can't seem to break her of it.
I have the invisible fence when I have a line break I just use the dog collar to locate the break. one side of the break will make the collar beep may have to turn it up while doing the test
Had a Rabbit chew through a wire once that was just under some landscape stones behind a evergreen shrub collar stopped beeping so i reached in behind the shrub to get the wire and i ended up with hand full of fur just then the handfull of fur decided to runaway at that time my heart stopped . had visions of skunk...... but was just a rabbit
I always solder my joints and the use heat shrink wrap used for automotive wire then its water proof
the new systems out that you mount up high and it casts a umbrella over your yard that the dog has to stay inside of .... with the wire system you can do weird shapes though

I have Invisible Fence for my dog and will say it is GREAT! Keeps my dog in the yard no matter how bad she wants out to play. One drawback though is it don't keep neighbor dogs out. Neighbor dogs are a real PITA, nearly shot my last neighbor over his.. I also have the Wire Break Locator shown in the link. It works, but, you will have to pay very close attention to the sound change when you cross over the break. When my fence stops working, first thing of course check batteries in collar. Power to system. Walk the fence-line looking for obvious damage. Then power off and check for continuity on the wire. If it shows open I know I have a break, continuity = no break. Depending on the size of your yard, you can use a separate wire and go about 1/2 way on the loop cut the loop then use the separate wire to check for continuity both ways. Takes time but you will narrow it down and find the break. I use Heat Shrinkable Crimp Connectors- waterproof and don't cause a place likely to break from soldiering. Have had mine for several years and learned from experience. Don't claim to know it all just my 2cnts worth.
