Well finally can update with some pics... btw, everyone could use a scissor lift... the things are really nice when working alone on a 14 1/2 foot side wall building! (I'm done with it so it'll be going the Craigslist way soon!)
Lets see, finished the majority of the sheetrock. The upper hot tub room, and lower machine shop room completely textured and painted.... waiting for wall color of the upper room to completely finish.
Took a pic of the six high bay T-8 light fixtures in the building... the neighbors say its like daylight outside the windows. Inside, well... you can see its great lighting!
The shower is installed and the boiler is working. In the pic you can see the furnace I was using to heat the building this winter. It will be utilized mainly for a air handler/AC unit but could also be used to heat the space in time of need.
Primed and painted the OSB in the shop. Used Sherwin Willaims stuff... their stain blocking primer and top coat as well. Worked well, as many of you know you have to go back and pick off the blistered pieces and touch up but that will wait till winter.
Next projects:
1. Finishing the utility/boiler room sheetrock then paint it so I can finish up the plenum and have A/C ready to go.
2. Windows in the upper hot tub room.
3. Epoxy the concrete floor.
Then on to finish work trimming out windows, interior doors, install the spiral staircase.... you know.... the list never ends....

Got the sheetrock done & painted, the epoxy floor is done, the spiral stair installed, and the 2-post set inside the building. No, it hasn't been bolted down yet so thats why its "wider" than one would expect.

Nice progress. It looks good.
Has been a while since I posted... busy times here in Iowa.
A buddy and I finished the VCT in the loft where the hottub will be... just have to strip and wax it. Then on to trimming out the space.
Had the lift installed properly... man is that nice to work with!
Last weekend I went on a Craigslist hunt and found a rolling toolbox/bench and a Graco Oil Drain Pedestal... If I told you what I paid it might be considered a crime... lets just say they were really well worth running up to Minneapolis for.
Finishing the interior work will begin soon... then I gotta get my Mill and Lathe installed before the snow flies!

Hello everyone!
We're currently in BLIZZARD conditions so I'm sitting where its warm catching up on the site.
Today I spent a bit of time in the shop servicing vehicles, cleaning up a bit, and started hanging the doors... finish work isn't my thing so I've been dragging my feet a bit. Its been really nice however since winter came with the floor heat! Nice and warm inside the shop and I only have it set at 45 degrees F. Outside temps are around zero!
The hot tub has been nice, and will be especially nice after I get the snowmobiles out tomorrow!

Been a while since I updated here... still working on several projects and yesterday I installed my jib crane (I think thats what its called). When I bought it the I beam wasn't long enough so I took the 8 footer off and welded on a 10 foot piece. I also added 3 feet to the tower, added the crossmember from the top out to the end of the I beam, secured to the floor and the wall.
Not really sure what its upper load limit is but without all the additions before I sandblasted it there was a sticker that read 1000 lbs. Assuming I added length to the I beam (which would lessen the limit out at the end of the beam) and the fact I added additional upper support and secured to the wall (which would slightly increase the limit). I'm going to assume it could handle close to the original 1000 lbs. It will more than handle what I'll use it for.
Of course I still need to finish with paint, trolley, and the chain hoist.
If anyone has any insight on how to calculate the load range send it my way!

Amazing shop! I noticed in some of the in progress pics that you wrapped the entire foundation in foam. Thank you for the detail on the siding/sheathing connection to the foam and flashing, but what did you do in the doorways? Did you cut the foam down and poor the apron to the floor or did you bridge the gap with something? (And do you have a pic?)

Not entirely sure I understand your question... my floor was poured flat where the foam encompassed the entire floor. While pouring we measured to the center of the doors and sloped the concrete in those areas a bit to make sure while driving a car into the shop the edge of the concrete wasn't broken.
We didn't use a stem wall around the perimeter... my plates begin right on the floor. While prepping the site we ensured the floor level was above any of the surrounding streets thus the water runs away from the building.
I did drape silver bubble wrap down into the footing trench on the interior portion of the building... is that what you are looking for??

This one basically shows after we poured the footings we set the forms for the floor pour right on the top of the footing... so after the pour was done and we pulled the forms off I cut foam in 2 foot lengths and surrounded the floor with them.

I guess I was wondering if the heavy foam was left in place between the new apron and the slab when the apron was being poured. If it wasn't, then what did you all do? And if it was, then how are you bridging the 2" of foam between the apron and the main garage floor so it isn't exposed to air and car tires?

Now I understand... I have not poured the apron (or driveway)... its still in gravel right now. The house you see is a rental and my tennant parks in front of my shop. His car leaks oil and thus I won't be pouring the driveway until I decide to tear that house down! LOL
I can tell you this, how I intend to do it... When I poured the slab I kept the floor heat tubes well away from the overhead doors. I cut the 2 inch foam down about 6 inches then I'll put black board (or expansion joint) up against the slab. I'll keep it just a bit below the surface and use seam caulk to make up the difference.
I know you are thinking about thermal break here... I realize there will be a little loss in those areas but should be minimal since I kept the tubes further away from the overhead doors anyway. I overkilled all the insulation in the shop anyway so I doubt I see a difference in my heat bills. With the highly efficient boiler my heat bill has been REALLY reasonable.

I used a roll of expansion joint foam around the slab (inside the block) which is 1/2" thick (and 6" tall) which has a perforated strip 1/2" from the top edge. It's easy to come back after the pour and pull that top 1/2" of the joint material out and then caulk. I'm planning to use that between the slab and apron on the top and the normal 2" that I'm wrapping around the rest of the exterior along the the bottom in the apron areas. It's nice to know I'm not alone in that theory.

A nearly exact duplicate Walker floor jack to the one I have.
The one in the back I got from a family friend who was a mechanic for years (model 782).
The one in front (reddish color) I got from a young man near here... it was originally used in a local Ford garage (model 882). Its been painted several times over the years but under the cover you can still see the original blue color.
I've been in contact with Hiball who helped me with a kit for my 782.... soon as I have time to install it anyway. He'll be contacted for parts for the 882 as well.
Anyone have a paint color code for the Walker blue?

I live in Mason City and just had my plans approved for my garage. I am also going with floor heating system. I would love to come check out your place sometime and pick your brain. Mine will be 26x46 still unsure ceiling height, a lift is a must (car lover also)
