I consider my old iPhone 3g to be an important tool. Whether its being used as a flashlight, looking up vehicle how-tos, surfing this forum, or checking the weather, I use it constantly.

With that being said, its on its last legs and its time to replace it. My contract with AT&T is up also. I was debating getting an iPhone 4 but have heard great things about the Droids.

What do you guys use/have and do you like it? What service do you use?

Sonim and BB Pearl 9100 3g... both good in their own respects... T-mobile network - pretty damned fast (v. 3.75g or something), I like the BB as a smarty, but the Sonim is awesome if you like to hit your phone w/ a baseball bat or run it over w/ a bulldozer.

Once you enter the ease of use world of Apple/iPhone I have a hard time believing that you would be happy with a Droid or at least find the transition somewhat painful at first! :) Just a thought coming from the mac/pc world... :)

Here are some "head to head" articles:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/199844/iphone_4_vs_droid_x_a_headtohead_comparison.html

http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=Iphone+4+vs+Droid&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

Keep in mind; many article are coming from a technical perspective (who has more bells, whistles, tech specs etc.); this many times doesn't factor in the "ease of use" that apple is so famous for... the enjoyment factor and intuitive usefulness on a daily basis that Apple strives and works so hard to provide! Just some thoughts, keep us abreast on what you think and what you end up doing! :)

And of course; the "official propaganda" from apple! :)

http://www.apple.com/iphone/

PS: the rumor mill has been going for years that Verizon will have the iPhone but it seems more of a reality soon; according to these articles! I know AT&T has been a point of frustration for many.... depends on your area network and real day to day usage experiences! :)

Fortune article: http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2010/10/29/verizon_iphone_seidenberg/

articles all over the web! :)

In January you will be able to use Verizon with the Iphone. I am holding out for that.

I had an iPhone for 10 days. Hated AT&T absolute **** for voice quality. When I left after 10 days, service was supposed to be the prorated amount for using the minutes. My plan was $120/month total. They sent me a bill for $435...

Went back to Verizon, just recently got an HTC Incredible (droid) and I like it minus the battery life. The new iPhone (4g?) is really a slick device though. Also I think Apple does a lot of anti-competitive things when locking down their phones and services, reference Palm and iTunes. If you don't care about that I would wait for the iPhone with Verizon. I went back to a 2005 "dumb" phone just to get away from AT&T they were that bad (in all areas of the country, I travel all over the east coast and midwest).

Because ATT service is terrible here and Verizon is allot better.

I'm holding out for the switch, too. That's assuming it ever happens. The Rumors have been flying for years. While there are more rumors than ever, a deal between Apple and Verizon is still unconfirmed by the companies.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed, because ATT service is horrible.

I had a iPhone 3G from my last job; after leaving there, I bought the Droid phone and loving it. I got the Samsung Galaxy S and it is great; sharper than the iPhone and larger display. It also has a 1 gHz processor so it is pretty quick. Just my 2 cents....

Oh another plus .. you can change your battery out easily, unlike the iPhone ..

Tmobile needs more towers, period. The new Samsung Galaxy TAB touch 7" ipad looking monstrosity is soon to be available on Tmobile too...

strange the only service that is better than tmobile is verizon. This is always confirmed by my friends that have or verizon. I will have good signal and they will always have better. Also in consumer reports, verizon had the best coverage in every city listed, followed by tmobile.

maybe its very area specific for you. Over the summer i drove from illinois to colorado, i had coverage the whole time. The only thing i would lose data coverage in some areas. Mostly in Nebraska.

In town, I have no probs - run the tmobile 3g all day long, when I hit the booneys where I live, the coverage drops to 2g and when I go in the basement, its GSM only... I think Tmobile is great along population centers and interstates but drops off when you get out in the sticks... my carrier is a local company, so maybe that has to do w/ their tower coverage or the lack up priority in upgrading available towers. I basically live in BFNW surrounded by corn, wife's dad is a farmer and has the same coverage problem when he is out in the fields - he's used verizon, att, and tmobile and always has the same coverage problem, sticks w/ the tmobile affiliate though since they are a local company.

I've had the Verizon Motorola Droid for about a year now and love it. I have an ipod touch, and don't think it is any more intuitive than the droid, hell it hardly gets used anymore. Ill be eligible for an upgrade here in a few months, and will stick with droid. Its like anything else tech, if you learn the features and tricks, you can get a lot more done.

I made the switch from a standard flip phone on AT&T to a Droid on Verizon back around July. For me, Verizon offers better service in the areas I needed. I will say that dealing with Verizon has been more enjoyable than dealing with AT&T.

In terms of the actual Droid, I find it really easy to use and if you are much of a gmail user you will find it works pretty near flawless with that. Honestly the feature I use the most on it is gtalk. Nearly everyone I talk to frequently is on gtalk and that REALLY cuts down on text messages needed. I found the phone really easy to use. As I tell people about it, I bought it and it just worked. I've heard the newer Droid phones are even better/faster.

I have Verizon on a Motorola Droid and the battery life is amazing, better than anyphone I or anyone I know has ever had. I use it a LOT and at the end of the day I always have at least 45-50% batter life left.

My Ipad is on AT&T 3G and anytime the service is slow on it due to AT&T's terrible coverage, my Verizon service is always great.

My cell phone is the only non Apple "computer" I own, and thats because of AT&T and nothing else. If my Ipad is slow or has no 3G service, I can live, but in business, I can deal with AT&T awful phone service.

The day the iPhone is on Verizon, I will be in line to get one.

Motorola Droid X with Froyo is what I use and love it :) I have never touched an Iphone so no comparison.

And about why iphone on verizon would be a good thing? Because nobody in my area has an iphone because there is no AT&T service here.. well at least none worth paying for.

If the iphone is really going to verizon there is going to be a boom of Iphone users in my area lol.

I might try one some day but I love my droid so far.

I just replaced the batteries in my 3G and my wife's.
Doing mine first took a while, about an hour, but my wife's took 10 minutes.

Bought an original OEM battery for ~$12.

My iphone has a new lease on life!

I can't comment on US carriers, but i LOVE my iPhone 4.
Upgraded from a 3GS, and i'm satisfied. Speed, screen, camera is the major upgrades i think. And to still have all the apps i bought previously is a plus.

For a garage helper perhaps an iPad would be more appropriate though. Better to browse the web and view PDF/images.

If you want a tough phone look at the Casio Brigade. Its the big brother to the Rock and is a fantastic phone. I have it on my Verizon plan. It is military grade and has a full qwerty keyboard. I drop it all the time and have even been known to stand on it to show its durability. They say you can run over it with a semi and know someone who hit his with a lawn mower. Still working fine.

Forgot to mention the camera on this phone is better than my top of the line digital camera. Can zoom in to 16X IIRC and no pixilation at that zoom. I have an 8 gig card in it and have over 500 contacts, 1000 songs, and a couple hundred pics on it. Plus it has GPS and I am sure other things I don't even know about.

The GPS paid for itself one day when I was with my dad out in the field working on his trencher. We were replacing a link in the chain and noticed it had an offset hole in it. I looked up Vermeer and the city it was in where we ordered the part and called them and got the information I needed. Standing in the middle of the field I got this when I would have had to go back to the house and look up all the data and waste a couple hours doing it.

If you're an Apple fanboy and like mother Apple telling you what apps you can and can't have go with an Iphone. If you want a phone that isn't controlled by the man at Apple get a Droid.
Personally I've never liked Apple's monster grip on it's software and hardware. Open source is better and the market shows people agree with me. Droid has passed Iphone in sales already.

I love my Droid Incredible with Verizon. My first smartphone but very easy to use and I especially like the auto sync with my contacts in gmail. Still learning but so far very satisfied.

I would suggest a Windows Mobile device over Android, and Iphone. You can do much more with a WM PPC. When SPB Mobile Shell 5.0 finally comes out the phone will be mind blowing.

Plus with WM, you can cook roms or flash one of many custom roms that are out there. Also you can run Android on them, and Iphone type skins.

P.S. My flashlight is 3x's brighter than the Iphone, with 3 settings... LOL

I have the HTC EVO and love it. It is a droid. Find a droid user and have them demo it for you and I think you will discover that the change from Iphone to Droid is pretty seamless. I am not sure of all the features of the Iphone but some of the droid features I love that go unpublished are Voice recognition. I answer text, email or make notes by using my vice and the droid converts it to text. I can google search something by simply speaking the phrase I want to find. It is amazingly accurate. When using the GPS you say the address and off you go. Pretty cool

I have sprint and with 3 phones with unlimited data, text and 1400 minutes (you are only billed for cals to land lines this is very important) my bill is 177 a month.

With Sprint it is important to remember that any call to or from ANY mobile phone is free. That makes a difference when comparing deals.

FWIW- I have a Droid X and the only complaint is battery life.

Most notable difference with droids?

After purchasing the droid, I wasn't suddenly overcome with an inability to shut up about how much better the iphone is because it has apps and cases and two cameras and a pez dispenser and...

Love my friends and the iphone is great, I just don't need to hear about it every 5 seconds.

Buy from COSTCO if you can T-Mobile Samsung (Galaxy S) VIBRANT $99.00 to new subscribers, also the HTC G-2

T-Mobile Plans will save you $$$$ if they good coverage in your area

From www.Wirefly.com you can either buy the Samsung VIBRANT, Sprint HTC EVO

Sprint has some good plans, you can call ANY mobile # for free, nights start at 7PM

Samsung Galaxy S (different names with different carriers) has BEST LED 4" screen
1 Ghz processor. Do search for samsung vibrant or Samsung Galaxy S reviews and READ.

Another droid user here. Liked it so much, got one for my wife. We both love the Droid platform. GPS is great. Gmail and Google Docs are flawless. Free apps, wifi, mobile hotspot, teathering. Best line of phones IMHO.

I've been through over a half a dozen smart phones in the last 9 years, and regularly play with others smart phones whenever I get a change. IMHO the Iphone 4 has the best interface and has a battery that will get you through a day of regular use. I love my Iphone 4.

I believe the DROID comes closest to the Iphone experience than any of the others, but the interface is not as smooth to me (maybe I'm just used to the Iphone) and it is missing the sheer volume of APPS that the Iphone has to offer. (Eventually they may catch up.) Some complain about Apple Screening and only allowing certain apps, but they have had an APP for everything I ever looked for, and I don't have to worry about downloading a virus laced abortion since Apple screened it. There are also plenty of free APPS.

The GPS works great on the 4 and I never had any problems with it.

Verizon adds make it sound like AT&T network has tons of holes. Two years ago when I switched from Verizon I would have agreed but AT&T has come to a level at least as good as Verizon was when I left. In a couple of months this argument wont matter because Verizon will have the Iphone.

Try to spend time playing with both and decide what you like best.

Chris

I like my incredible. Anyone I have encountered that has used both, prefers Android systems. I have never had an Iphone, and have not used At&t in years, like nearly 18 years. But, I know people with At&t, and in the Phoenix area, they constantly complain about the service. Add Froyo on top of that, which is Android 2.2, and you have a very nice, and quick phone. I do have to admit, I did buy a bigger battery to increase battery lfe. The stock battery is 1250 ma, and I bought a 1750ma battery. It does fit with the stock battery cover, and has made quality of Phone life so much better.

Well, I had the opportunity to play with an Android phone today (HTC Evo) and loved it. Looks like I'm going that route. I heard amazon is having a 1 penny deal on them this weekend.

Thanks all!
