i have been doing some research too although I will not be using it to make a living. I have decided on the IR 231. It seems to be a good unit that you can find used for a real decent price. It is a model that has been around for a long time so that makes me feel better that it will last a lot longer.

Don't know if that helps, but that is what I have found.

Chad, just a little note on the IR 231. They used to be made in Athens PA, and at some point they moved the operation to China. The IR 231 the mechanics use at my place of employment were made in the USA and are at least 10-12 years old. According to the mechanics they never oiled them, drop them all the time, and they run flawlessly. These Air tools are provided by the company, so they don't exactly take care of them, and they still run really well.

I bought a IR231C from Lowe's which was the chinese made one. It last less then a year before it broke. It was my fault it broke because I was overtighenting a nut, but I was less them impressed with the model I got. I'll eventually disassemble it and see what I broke on it, but I think the older IR231's have better quality then the newer ones. That being said, I saw that Lowe's had a package deal, IR 231 impact wrench, a 3/8 I/R air ratchet and some impact sockets for $140. Next time I need to use my air wrench, I am just going to by that set.

Saw that set on sears website too. Would be a nice setup. I figured that some of the older wrenches would be better, but have still heard far more good about the IR 231 than any of the others in its price range and since they have been around so long you can find lots on Ebay and CL too.

I have a 2195Qti.. I love it. Very light weight and super quite, my co worker has a 231. While there is nothing wrong with the 231 it's on the heavy side and loud. If I had to use it everyday i'd go nuts mind you it's what I have at home...

I think the added cost of the titanium model is worth it only if you are a professional and use the gun everyday.

I bought the IR Thundergun and I wish it was bigger. I've found bolts I couldn't twist off.:shocking:

You must not have a decent air compressor...

I've used the thundergun for everything without ever having any trouble. This includes the crank pulley on my car which is torqued to 200 ft-lbs. The thundergun is rated at 600 ft-lbs in reverse!

I'm regulating the pressure to 90psi like my manual calls for. I suppose it might do more if I went past that.
I'm using a 220v 5hp compressor that puts out 18.5cfm.

Gary, sounds like you have a decent compressor. You may know this, but just in case, the 90 psi means at the inlet of the tool, while it is running. So depending on what kind of pressure drop you are getting after the requlator, you may need to bump up the pressure to get what you need at the gun.
