IR 2135QTIMAX Impact no power, except reverse?

i bought a second hand IR 2135QTIMAX(i grew up next door to the IR plant in Athens Pa, so im kind of partial to their stuff). Anyways, its got lots of power in reverse, but has no power in forward.

curious if anyone else has had this situation??

Im wondering if one of the tune up kits will resolve this??

Could the direction switch be sticking and only engaging reverse completely?

If you don't feel too uncomfortable opening it up, I would guess that something got stuck blocking some of the passages inside around the selector or the air motor.

I worked at the Athens factory for several years. Anyhow, the performance is supposed to be higher in reverse than forward, but it sounds like you may have a bigger difference than intended. I'm assuming the power knob is turned fully in the CCW position. Also that the buttons both bottom out in each direction when you switch between forward and reverse, if not then the timing of the gear teeth on the buttons to the reverse valve may be off, this is not likely unless the buttons were removed at some point. Another thing you can check is the muffler felt that sits on top of the motor. You need to split the tool in half and make sure the felt has not slipped out of position. If there is any doubt you could pull it out and test without it to verify but you will have a little bit louder tool. Hope this helps.

im going to tear it apart tomorrow, and see if anything looks amiss inside. anyone know where i could find a diagram of the workings of this impact?

I used to walk through that parking lot every day on my way to school, and ised to sit with the security guards all the time too. Had lots of friends and family that worked there. too bad they shut it down
