IR 2135QTiMAX problem...

Hey guys, I joined the forum just now hoping to get some insight as to what's wrong with this cursed impact wrench...

I bought it in August off of Kijiji, it was brand new in the box (had never even had a fitting installed). I am not a mechanic... I'm just a guy with a garage who doesn't like to pay to have his car fixed. I'm also a graduate student, so outfitting my garage with air was an expensive process. Anyways, I digress...

I got the tool home, threw a fitting on it, oiled it, and hooked it up to the air. Gave it a quick zap on the trigger just to make sure it worked. It did.
Into the toolbox it went, where it stayed for about 5-6 weeks.
Well, the other day I was excited to put on my interim 'fall' wheelset on my car (the winter wheels will go on soon!). I hooked up my fancy new tool to the air hose, and it immediately started spinning. It's like the trigger was stuck... but I have no idea how I could have problems with a brand new tool.
Curious, I took it apart and looking down into the handle there is some kind of pin that moves with the trigger. There is also a white plastic cylindrical piece that this pin is going through/near. This plastic piece appears to be broken. I cannot find the piece in my exploded diagram of the gun.

Anybody have any thoughts on this? I paid fair market for the gun, maybe a bit less (240CAD) so having to fix it already is a kick in the pants. I registered it on IR tools to get the extra warranty, but now that I'm trying to use the warranty they want a receipt. I do not have one.

Any help is appreciated! I want to have this fixed asap, as I have a few jobs coming up that it'd be helpful. I hate using my electric impact gun. :p

Oh, and a side note, I just received my 115-LBK1 care kit and protective rubber boot in the mail... I had ordered these things to protect and service the ****** thing (while it was sleeping in the toolbox). Salt in my wounds to have 'em here for a dead tool. Haha

Can you check the company you bought it from? They may have records of sales.

I know IR has been outstanding with all my problems, find a local shop that does warranty work and at the least they could get the part.

Yeah, I didn't buy it from a shop, unfortunately. The guy was a mech and told me he had won it or it was a gift from his employer or something to that effect. He was terrible to communicate with via email (super slow replies) so I was just happy to finally get in touch and buy the gun. Me thinks he doesn't like computers. I've since emailed him to ask if he could get the receipt from his employer but no reply, yet. That was about a week or so ago when I first realized the gun had the issue.

I called a local IR repair dealer and they said it doesn't sound like it'd be much more than 50 bucks to repair. I'd like to buy the part and DIY to save the $, but like I said, the exploded diagram doesn't seem to show the part. I am about to take it in and bite the bullet and pay the repair fee, but I figured I'd give this a whirl to see if maybe it was a common problem with this gun.

I rebuilt my 2115, it's quite easy but without knowing the part you're kind of SOL.

Have you tried soaking the gun with oil, maybe it's gummed up? I've had my 2135 for over a year now and it has never let me down. Best gun out there IMHO, hope you had a fluke.

I can help you out. You have a PM.

PM replied, thanks!

I will have to take this thing apart again and see what's up. I had trouble getting it entirely apart so I gave up. I could not get the trigger removed... there are two silver tabs on the handle that I think must be pushed in, then I'm not sure of what to do.

You think so? Failed bushing with zero use?

I really have to figure out how to get this tool apart... then I could post pics of the broken piece.
Is there a DIY rebuild walkthrough for the IR guns?

yup. if it runs as soon as it's hooked up it's going to be the inlet bushing.

*edit* if it's not the bushing it could also be the trigger pin,the plastic may be broken

Make sure you grease it also!

I think IR is going to take care of me on this one. Fantastic service.

And yes, the gun will be maintained religiously. I have the service kit with the IR oil and IR grease with the special grease gun thing. I have the rubber boot to keep the thing looking pretty underneath. Haha, I wanted to protect my investment.
Now I want to add a hammerhead to my collection. Those things look impressive.

Off topic: is there an issue with buying a 1/2" hammerhead vs the 3/8"? They make the same torque etc... I do not own any 3/8" impact sockets. Would be cheaper for me to buy the 1/2" version and share sockets with my 2135, but I guess I sacrifice some in terms of not being able to get into as tight of spaces?

The only difference between the 1/2" and 3/8" Hammerheads is the square drive anvil. ;)

if you send it to IR make sure there is ZERO water damage. If they find water damage ( rust ) they will ship it back in a pile of parts and say NO WARRANTY

Thanks Mike!

Pat at IR has informed me of this recall and is taking very good care of me. I'm really impressed with the service and didn't bank on such a great result from my having posted here on the forum. Goes to show that IR stands behind what they sell.

Can't wait to have this gun fixed up and ready to use!
