For anyone that has one of these I just noticed somethjnf on mine today...on the right side if you set it at 5....the other side is set at 4...
Which side do you go by? And it's only settings are to tighten it correct. Loosening it was just a full balls to the wall all the time right
Here's a pic of the 2 sides

And is this the only point of a grease joint? Or is it best to take it apart

If you set the side that is at 4 on 5 then the other side should be past 5 which will still be full power. The grease fitting in the back is all you need, it feeds grease through the center of the motor into the impact mechanism. It works quite well.

I have the little grease gun for those and all I have ever used is wheel bearing / chassis grease in mine with no problems.

Unfortunately yes, unless your tool truck guy carries it. I haven't found a single retailer that carries the stuff, even those that sell IR guns.

I'm sure another grease would work also but I bought the kit to get the little grease injector gun thingy.

I wish they sold the grease at local retailers. I hate the idea of paying $10 for shipping on something that cost about the same.

My Sears gun appears to be the same, except that when the right hand side is set to 5 the left hand side is also set to 5. If the right hand side is pushed in (for right hand rotation), you can set the tightening torque from 1 to 5. If you then push in the left hand side to loosen, it will then be at maximum torque. If for some reason you want to have less than max torque in reverse, you use the numbers on the lefthand side. If you then change to the tightening direction without changing any numbers, you will be at maximum tightening torque. In other words, go by the numbers on the side that is pushed in and the other direction will be at maximum torque.

Just a few words of caution......don't get carried away greasing it...production work 5 days a week only needs a couple pumps once a week....if over greased it effects the twin hammers and then they can't do their job.....I have an older 231 bought new in 79 that I beat the brakes off it for 18 years working for a Detroit Diesel distributor...I still have today at home and still hits like the day I bought it....

You can use one of these with a regular grease gun. I always used chassis grease in my IRs with no problems.

Cassidy, where did you get that? I like that better than the IR kit as it appears that you can load it with bulk grease, so you can use the "right" grease if you have it, or "any" grease in a pinch (better than none at all) part number?

thanks!

I bought mine around 1990. I was disapointed that it was made in japan.but i still have it and its never been rebuilt or opened up for any reason. The new ones are made in china. How is their quality?
