IR Air Compressors

So, we're finally moving into a house and I'm getting ready to buy a good air compressor to last me a good long time. This would be used for automotive restoration work (though probably not very much painting), maybe some light blasting (no plans for any HD blast cabinets though), and some light WW duties (nail guns & sanders).

I've got about $800 in gift cards at Home Depot, but there's nothing worthwhile there that I like. I worked it out w/ my better half that we'll use up my gift cards to buy a fridge at HD and then I can drop the $800 anywhere else w/o guilt or fear, so that's my budget range.

I've been looking at the IR units in the 15-20 cfm @ 90psi range, and right now, the SS5L5 60gallon vertical at Northern Tool for $850 + free shipping looks like the best deal out there. I know that for a purchase like this you should always stretch yourself and buy a bit bigger and better than you need at the moment, and I was originally looking at two stage units, but this single stage one seems to fit the bill.

Any suggestions for good two stage units in the $800 range shipped? Or is this single stage IR a good choice?

I could be wrong, but I don't think you're gonna touch a 2 stage from any manufacturer that I would want to buy for less than $800. I think the small IR 2 stage is a little over $1k.

If there is a Tractor Supply near you, they have an IR 80 gal./5hp/18.1cfm for $794. Can't remember the model #. I think the same size in 2 stage is $1200 or there about.

I bought a Delta 2-stage (made by DeVilbiss) at Sam's Club for $800 w/ tax. I think they carry a different brand now, but the price is close to the same. Well, after checking, the new one is $830 + tax and it's also made by DeVilbiss. 6hp, 240v, 30A, 80 gal., 175 psi max, 14 scfm @ 100 psig & 13.5 scfm @ 175psig. And it comes with some accessory kit.

Be forwarned though, you'll end up spending at least half that much piping it up, getting a regulator, filters, etc.

Fortunately I have been accumulating a lot of the accessories I'll need for a compressor this size (tools, FRLs, hose reels, fittings, etc.). Like you said though, I do anticipate putting some $$$ down to plumb and wire the garage for 220V.

What are the advantages of a two-stage vs. single-stage? What I've been mainly looking at is rated cfm to judge if it can do what I need. Is there something else I should consider?

2-stage is over-hyped. For shop applications I don't agree that 2-stage compressors are better.

A high quality, appropriately sized, low RPM single stage compressor (like a Quincy) will last a lifetime.

It totally depends on what you plan to do with it, and what you WILL be doing with it in the future when you discover how handy it is to have a large compressor around.

Two stage units allow more energy to be stored in the same capacity tank, when compared to single stage. More pressure equals more stored energy as the air molecules are packed tighter together. If you plan on high volume uses, such as blast cabinets, or even alot of use with a DA sander or a 90 grinder, then you will appreciate the additional capacity the two stage has, giving it more time between cycles.

This has been discussed numerous times in the past, search for some of the old compressor threads. I do recall someone buying one of the Harbor Freight compressors, the largest, made here in the US by Bel-Air I think. Apparently a good two stage for a real good price. hopefully some one will chime in with more info.
