Hi, new member to the site. This site might just cost me my friends and girlfriend... Anyways, I'm in the process of getting a new air compressor (the stubby kobalt). I have an older IR 2131S impact that I acquired over 5 years ago. I have used it occasionally and have noticed it slowly getting weaker. It won't remove a tire now so I'm thinking it's time to rebuild it. Anyone know of a good how to on the web? Also, I looked today and found 2 different rebuild kits. One was just the anvil and a few other pieces. the other looked more like the appropriate kit with seals and all. I don't think the one kit with anvil is the correct one because it was for a standard 2131 and didn't have the 2" anvil. Do I need both kits to do a rebuild?
Here is the anvil kit.

Thanks in advance. When I get my garage cleaned up to satisfactory standards I'll snap some pics and post up.
Thanks,
Brian

Here are some manuals that look like they might be for your gun:

parts exploded view:

http://www.irtechpubs.com/ir_pdfs/Tools/Vehicle Service Tools/Air Impact Tools/P7173.PDF

Maintenance manual:

http://www.irtechpubs.com/ir_pdfs/Tools/Impact Tools/Air Impactools/45481785_ed1.pdf

If your anvil isn't broken; then I would think you wouldn't need the anvil kit but if your in there and want to rebuild everything as new... you could do that too!

Also... have you lubricated your gun in the grease port?

Here is a kit they sell for injecting the grease:

Air Tool Grease Gun Lube Kit for composite guns IR115LBK1

https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1....,cf.osb&fp=2279860aca39e76e&biw=1280&bih=937

Also, I have had good luck running conditioner through old guns with good results as well...

16 oz net wt Aerosol PB Blaster Air Tool Conditioner

I rebuild IR guns for work and 90% of the guns I touch need the seal kit. The rebuild is very easy, just take your time and LUBE EVERYTHING! I use ATF for rebuilding, cheap and works great.

Good luck

the cylinder and end plate are probably worn out. pretty common with those guns. take it apart and post some pics. also, unless they are using generic pics, the links you posted are the wrong parts, not for a 2131.

Thanks for the replies. the only thing in the first kit that I know I need is the circlip and ring that holds the sockets on.
I will look up that part number now.
Thanks,
Brian

I'd hope it's a generic pic. It says 2131 in the part number. Thanks for that pic. I might just start taking it apart tonight to see what's going on. Hopefully with pics and the help of you all I will atleast be able to tell if a rebuild kit will solve my issues.
Thanks!

when you say 'used it occasionally' what does that mean? 3x a day? once a week? once a month?

given your compressor situation, i'm going to guess it doesn't need a rebuild. grease the anvil side, give it a little air tool oil, and maybe try it hung off a different compressor. my 2131qt is about the same age, maybe a little older, and is used pretty regularly (for a non-pro) - probably 2-3x a week - and feels as strong as the day i got it. some of these guns are used in tire shops (read: used hard all day and not maintained at all) and last 3-5 years. hard to imagine hobbyist use killing one that quickly...

I used to work at a factory that we used the **** out of IR2135's.

If the anvil broke, it was usually split along its axis in the hammer area and wold turn (no load) and stall under load but not impact. Much less commojn for the anvil tip to shear off.

Most IR2135 problems we had were worn air motors. The composit vanes would wear mostly. Vanes side walls would develop a concave "cupping" and not slide well in the motor rotor. The rest of the motor parts seemed to hold up well. Most all impacts we used were lubed regularly- wear happens.

On my personal impacts at home/hobby, I have not run into wear affecting operation of the air tools (lubed regularly).

(separate example of air motor wear) The place also used ARO indudtrial air drills in mchines. These would run constantly and have auto lube systems. The vanes sometimes would get worn enough to break down the middle and jamb up requireing a rebuild.

It was previously used in a tire shop. It has been used very infrequently since then. I will clean it out and see what happens. The kit is 30 dollars so that won't be the end of the world to rebuild and have a nice new gun again.

I took it apart yesterday, get an idea of what made it tick, I will have to figure out how to get in to the pineapple if you will but looked fairly simple in there.
I took a pic, will post it up later. Doesn't really show much though.

A number of places list this part as being available:

sears:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/par...&filterPart=&pop=flush&prst=0&shdPart=2131-3A

others all over the web:

http://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C....,cf.osb&fp=2f0b188327e19041&biw=1280&bih=937

Looks like the part may have been substituted: SUBSTITUTION
This is a manufacturer substitution. Part may differ in appearance but is a functional equivalent to prior parts including 2131-3A.

PART NUMBER: 2131-3A
Substitution: 2135-3

My IR 2131 got weak after about 10 years of use. I started to take it apart to see why, and noticed that the grease was all hardened up in the hammer area. I cleaned it up and applied high quality grease. It works just like when it was new. I have been careful to lube it regularly, so it seems that the air motor is still good. I never took that section apart.

If the wrench still turns full speed with no load, but is weak I suggest inspecting the hammer end first.

alright, I wanted to test the impact the other night with my new compressor. Pulled 2 lug nuts off my Mazda with no effort. I think it was just lack of air. I still need to find the C clip to hold the sockets in.
Those that lubed them up inside, just regular thick grease on the hammers? I can pull it apart again and try that as well.
Thanks for the posts everyone.

IR sells a grease gun tool and the grease:

http://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C....,cf.osb&fp=283fa2e594529f12&biw=1280&bih=937

Looks like for the retaining ring:

231-425A for the socket retainer clip

R1A-159 for the O-ring.

I have gotten a kit off my snap-on dealer; from a company called "just clips", it comes with o rings and clips; they sell one with a installation tool too (they are kinda hard to get off and on):

Thanks for the suggestion...

I've been told to replace the o ring and clip as a pair; if you skip the o ring apparently, it will wear the clip prematurely.
