I recently started a wiring project and before I started it I filled up my compressor one more time before disconnecting it.

I had it on a 30 amp breaker with 10 ga copper wire. I am finally getting around to wiring it back in and I noticed this on the pressure switch one of the legs for 220 seems to be melting.

I looked and found a new pressure switch for 70 dollars. If I am not mistaken is this the reason for a magnetic starter to prevent this?

Thanks Chad IMAG0038.jpg

You had a loose connection there - yes, the magnetic starter will do the high-current switching, with the pressure switch just controlling the starter contactor. If you have a 3HP or smaller compressor, usually those pressure switches are rated to switch the motor directly. So it's up to you - there are plenty of starter wiring threads on this site which will help you know how to do it should you decide to add one.

Connection was not loose I don't think . It is a 5 hp the compressor is 7 years old and this just started. I will do some reading and see if I can make a decision on a magnetic starter, but either way I should replace the pressure switch. Correct?

Yes, you should definitely replace the switch. The high-resistance may have been at the contact itself inside the unit.

If your motor has built-in overload protection, you can also use a two-pole contactor (available online for $15-20) which is switched by your pressure switch. This would be simpler and less expensive than using a full-blown motor starter, which is nothing more than a contactor plus motor overload protection.
