I found a Ingersoll Rand T30 60gal upright compressor locally going for $150. I haven't looked at the compressor in person yet but I do know that it has normal wear and tear and needs a new motor. Do you think its worth picking up for $150.00? I'm not sure what I'd be in for a rebuild kit and a new motor, I was hoping some of the compressor experts could give me some insight.

what model is it? The T30 is a series of compressor that utilized a 5HP up to 15HP motor.

Typical newer models are the 2340 (5HP 3450 RPM motor), 2475 (5HP 1725 RPM motor, 2475 (7.5HP 3450 RPM motor), 2545 (10HP 1725 RPM motor).

Is it the electric motor that need replaced? If the compressor is good and just needs a new electric motor I would definitely bite. Maybe offer $100? That is definitely a good air compressor. Even if you spent another 250 on another motor it would be well worth it in my opinion. I have a 1987 t30 and its as reliable as they come.

I would be running over to pick that up. Motors are easy to come by and fairly cheap. That is a great compressor for that price.

+1 to bring variety of bills in cash and bargain him down. :D If seller is unwilling to unbolt motor and replace, then sounds like your initiative to get your hands dirty should get you a bargain. Go for it.

Scout on CL for quality brand 5 HP motors like Leeson, Baldor, etc. Just get same RPM as original motor.

Here's an example 5 HP Leeson for $200 . . .

I'd take a look at it but 5 HP single phase motors aren't real cheap.

However keep in mind that a lot of motor issues are simple things like caps, bearings and/or and centrifical switches. The only real showstopper would be burnt out windings.

I disagree. Maybe 5 years ago these motors were super expensive but the prices have dropped. They can be had on Ebay for around $200. Add that to the $150 for the compressor and you have a really nice 60 gallon IR compressor.

Correct, ASSUMING that there is nothing wrong with the pump which may have caused the motor to fail. If set up properly, an electric motor should be extremely reliable and last for the life of the compressor.

Perhaps this compressor was too small for its application and was run at too high of a duty cycle. That would be another possible cause of motor failure.

If I had a spare 5 hp motor, I would bite, if you have to buy a new motor, its not as appealing but still not a hateful deal.
