Looking at purchasing a <$50 temp gun for a few projects.

Anyone running a reasonably priced gun they'd recommend?

I usually just go by amazon reviews for stuff I have no clue about. I don't own one but there are a bunch of low end models you can look at. Just get one with an illuminated display if possible (doesn't really depend on what you're using it for just easier to read; on the low end it's going to be simple illumination not integrated into the digital display (looking at them))

Something like this:

People will recommend milwaukee but...those are over a hundred bucks new and the low end model hasn't been getting good reviews.:dunno:

If anyone else is looking for one, I was at my local Menards over the weekend and they had their IR temp guns on clearance for $12...YMMV

I have an older one, you will really get a lot of use out of it, mine also has an aiming laser. Find the dead cylinder in a misfiring engine by pointing it at the exhaust manifold. See if the heat is on coming out of a high duct. Check accuracy of thermostats and temp gauges. See if your car radiator is working by seeing temp drop between bottom and top. Is your PC chip cooling properly. Can I pick up that piece I just welded. Are the trailer bearings working OK (One wasn't and was spinning on the spindle, I could also have just put my hand on it but still......)

Dang it is cold out this morning here in California, must be 42 degrees in the garage. Hopefully it will be 72 later, hope you guys in the midwest are enjoying your winter. (I've done my time in Chicago, thanks)

Ive had an IR temp gun for a hile now and it is quite handy. I don't know off hand the brand and it over at a buddy's house.i due have a funny story about it tho.

When I first got it a was sitting at my desk playing around with it, you know pointing at the tv, computer, window. My then roommate's daughter came in and after watching me for a bit asked what it was. I told her and threw it over at her. She pointed it at various things, then pointed it at her arm then at my arm. She did this a couple of time and then said there is something wrong with it because there was "NO WAY YOU'RE HOTTER THAN ME!" In her defense she was right, she is way HOT just like her mom (my roomy's ex) and her aunt who I dated for a while. Just to answer the next question, there will not bbe any pica posted :D

I love my Fluke 62 Mini. Very reliable and more accurate than the basic China IR Thermometer.

You can get them for around $85-$100, but they are made by Raytek which offers them (in a different color) as the Raytek MT6 which can be had for about $50.00

My fluke is a re branded Chinese gun. That being said both my fluke and HE guns have proved invaluable. I use them for everything from checking the grill temp to troubleshooting the cooling system on my crawler.
