Hey everyone.. i joined this forum a good while ago now when i was buying my house and it came with a garage and i was looking some ideasd.

So now i have the house.. still have a few wee things to do in the house then it will be onto the garage.

The walls are block with the internal walls drylined.

The roof is tin with a felt underlayer and then plylined.

Here are some pics..

23022012193.jpg

2 small storage areas in the roof space

23022012195.jpg

23022012196.jpg

my plans are to re roof the garage as the ply layer gets damp when it rains so it must be leaking. im unsure whether to go for another tin roof or try and save the money and slate it.

I have a bench wich i made from some 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" angle iron and some 2x6 timbers so i am going to modify it for my new garage. I have some steel shelfing and also a steel cabinet which i will be taking.

The flooring at the minute is vinyl tiles which i will be removing and depending on the condition of the floor underneath i intend to put and epoxy coat on it.

My oil storage tank for the house is in the garage for safety as there is a lot of oil theft happening so i intend in making a fire proof covering to surround it and maybe some storage above it.

I am unsure what is the best option for having a practical work bench and storage area but yet still leave a practical area where i can work on my cars.

If anyone would like to put foreward some design proposals it would be much appreciated.

I will keep you updated with any progress..

Many thanks

Séan

Yeah if i re-roof the garage i think i will keep the overhead storage.

May have to beef up the timber sizes as have several sets of alloy wheels which could fit up there perfectly.

Looks great Sean, can't wait to see your progress. You have a blank slate my friend, I can imagine some great things happpening in that space! BTW my shop space is 6'5" x 26" - so when you start thinking you have a small space just remember those of us who are jealous of all that room!

You mention the ply getting damp. Maybe rain as you say but it could well be condensation forming on the underside of the tin or felt and then dripping down, especially in cold weather? Could be a lack of ventilation up there.
If you're considering another tin roof, then the double skinned insulated type makes a massive difference to condensation and heat insulation.

Nice garage! Where in Ireland are you, and what kinds of cars will you be working on?

Im actually from armagh in northern ireland but i live just on the border..

My last garage was about 12x10 so this is a massive improvemnt.

I was thinking of an insulated tin roof as it would work out aloat cheaper than slates. Id have to do some calculations to see if the existing rafters can even cope with the extra wight associated with a slate roof.

Hopefully ill have all the work done to the house this week and i can maybe start on the garage next week.

In response to the oil tank comment, i could move it outside but all it takes is someone with a holesaw and cut into the tank or even just cut the lock and they can drain the oil but where it is situated i cant see there being much problem as any "hotwork" as i would class it could be carried out in the other shed at the back of this one.

I want to have a very modern look like some of the lovely garages on the forum.

nice to see another irish guy on showing his kingdom off ....
we dont have a pimple on an elephants **** compared to other users do we :sad: it makes me rightly jealous

the worst thing is that once you start putting tools etc into your garage it will be to small :p......

as for covering the roof you could use steel cladding with the grp light wells into it.....your probably looking at €300-€500 to do it....

the cars look nice, like the air system on the golf....did you install that yourself??? whats the cost of doing this job???

I have completed most of the painting since these pics were taken last week.

Ive a bit of touching up to do this evening and i will put up more pics of it.

I have the timber on the floor thgere to make a frame arround the tank and i am going to make a cabinet about the oil tank for a bit more storage.

I have had a few people in looking at the floor for me but i havent got the money at the minute with doing stuff to the car and saving to replace the roof so i think i might leave it untill next year and then do it.

Im doing an engine conversion on the red and white car so the floor would be messed up anyway so ill wait untill thats all finished with .

I have a bench frame that i got from a place i work part time on saturdays that will fit in perfect longays in front of the oil tank and i have all my steel shelfing and also the steel cabinet from my other garage that i stor some things in at my uncles waiting to go in here. Need to get it all moved over this weekend and get it painted up.

Thats all the news i have for now.. ill update maybe after the weekend if i get my shelfing etc over.

Well some progress.. have the garage cleaned out and i have the boxing done around the tank.. used some nice 3x11/2 so its good and beefy and could support anything i put on top of it..

Also have all of the pinting done.. i took these pics before i painted the boxing arround the tank cause it was late and the girlfriend was telling me to come inside for dinner.. lol

soo some pics..

Cleared out ready for my shelfing and cabined and bench.

15052012255.jpg

just put a few things on top to get an idea of what all i could put up there..

15052012256.jpg

This is my access hatch to fill the tank.
15052012257.jpg

Im going over to my other garage to pack up the stuff tonight and get it moved over, i then need to paint the shelfing and the cabinets as they are grey at the min and im gonna keep with the black and white theme..

So what do you think of the progress soo far?

Nice space. You should build in some soffit storage or put wall cabinets along the top of the walls between the attic storage areas. It would keep the floor space open. Nice work on the car.

I hope to get a unit built in the corner on top of the oil tank boxing to house all my trophies and on the wall to the left i hope to get my girlfriends brother to eventually put some down lights as i have 2 nice large frames with the magazines i have had the car feature in..

But i want to do the work needed on the car first as i have a lod of welding and grinding to do.. lol

Strong work so far man. Love the clean-up and the tank surround. Bonus utility points for gaining useable space on top of it. Can't wait to see more!

Some more progress

My bench:

4x4 fence posts, knotched out the top to take the 3x11/2 frame

20052012261.jpg

the 3x11/2 frame

20052012262.jpg

then all bolted together

20052012264.jpg

got out the grinder and a flap sanding disc and done some finishing touches like rounding off corners and since i done all this with a handsaw some of the cuts were not the straightest.. (lol im a building surveyer not a carpenter so please forgive me..)

20052012266.jpg

then some paint and moved into place

20052012268.jpg

some pics of my shelfing and cabinet painted and stuff moved onto them , they came up exceptionally well, wasnt expecting it tbh.

20052012272.jpg

and finally a pic of how the hole garage now looks compared to when i started..

20052012273.jpg

So still have to get a top for my bench, still deciding whether to go with some 3/4 plywood or so with some thick timber like 6x11/2" or 2" or something like that.

I also have the girlfriends father comming round to help me make some sort of covering for the 2 storage areas in the pitch roof area, dont really know what to do with it.. i have nearly finished with all the paint so it will be comming away from there and i intend on keeping interior parts of my car up there so it needs to be clean and dry.

Any opinions on what way i could do that?

I haven't updated this thread in a while..

So over the next few months I have a few plans:

1- re-roof the garage, sourced the tin and ringing so just need to gather up some helping hands..lol

2- sort out the flooring situation, I have sourced some vinyl tiles that you have to stick down in a black colour which would fit in with my theme.. I know it's not the best flooring type to put down but I got enough floor tiles to do both my garage and my girlfriends salon at the back of the garage which is the next project. I can't justify paying the money for interlocking tiles and as we plan to build a home in the future at some stage I will eventually get the garage I want..lol

3- finish off dry lining the walls near the roller door, I don't know why they were never done but I want to leave it uniform looking.

4- I want to paint the bottom half of the wall grey and then maybe either a red stripe or a black stripe..

5- I want to get some large stickers made up and put on the wall..

So I have enough to keep me going for a while..

I will update as soon as possible.

I don't think I've ever seen a Corsa before. That thing is wicked cool. Your garage space is coming along nicely. Keep it up!

Well collected my tiles this evening

image_zps6bcffd0c.jpg

They are a black with a grey speckle through it.

Not going to put them down until I get the roof re covered.

I got a price for the tin today and the ridging so just have to go collect it next week when I get paid again..lol

He said he had some ridge foam, its pre cut and seals the whole thing. Is it worth getting?

The foam is a good thing. Keeps the drafts out and closes up the gaps so the birds don't dont try to nest in it. Although, if you still have condensation problems you might be better with the drafts to keep it ventilated.

And go get yourself a decent fire extinguisher, especially with that oil tank indoors.

What do you all think about painting half the walls grey and having maybe 4 or 5 inch strip in black?

Gray would look great against what you have already done. Since you already have black base boards, it would agree with them to have an upper black stripe. Personally I think you also need to bring in some red where you can. Red jumps and hops and makes you feel good as well. See how your car shines in it's red color while sitting in the shop. Also your little red roll around stool jumps out!

Amazing transformation so far. Please keep posting pics. Cheers!

Thanks.. unfortunately the car is no longer red anymore as i have owned it for 7 years and had two magazine features with it I decided that it was time for a change and also put a bigger engine into it.. The new color is VW beetle L87 Pearl White

IMG_5325.jpg

I was thinking about getting some canvas made up to cover up the two storage areas, bay have them hung with a hook and press an eye into the fabric.

Going to the local man who sells all that type of stuff on wed as i have to leave back some sample for my new interior re-trim.

I think i have rounded up some volunteers to help me re roof the garage next weekend which is great news and i was able to blag the lend of some scaffolding from a man i used to work for just up the road from me which will make things easier.

Hi all.. happy new year..

I havent posted in a while but i have been making some progress on my garage.

I got a new roof covering put on which was needed as the old perspex sheets were leaking which was annoying me.

The next thing i was to sort is the interior of the gargae..

So there were 2 sections at the front of the garage that had not been plasterboarded and i decided to board up the left had side as I am looking to put a PVC door in on the right hand side so i decided not to board it up just yet as it would make more work for me in the future..

So then i got to painting.. I decided to go with grey on the bottom this time..

That is only one coat on so far, plan to get another few coats on tomorrow and im going to get a vinyl strip about 4 or 6 inches deep to seperate the grey and white.

Once i have all the painting done my next mission is to lay the floor tiles that i have had lying there for the las few months.
