Good Morning Folks.

Well I appear to have an hour or so spare, and no motivation to do anything in the garage having just run out of milk and therefore no more coffee until I cba to go to the shop.

So unfortunately my procrastination leads me to this thread. I wish to detail my wee garage from the day I moved in and how it has progressed.

So lets begin:

We moved in in December and the garage was rammed to the doors with all the stuff for the house and we slowly sifted through everything and brought it into the house as required. My the time february came round there wasnt much left, so it all got piled into a corner and the work began.

I had lost my 3000sq ft workshop on the 10th February and all of my stuff was then hauled back to the house, this was my first attempt at fitting all my **** in the wee garage.

181775_1511318394109_1568858115_31033929_1883682_n.jpg

3 hours later it looked much more like this, better, but absolutely no use if i wished to bring a car into it.

169084_1511318914122_1568858115_31033930_6384613_n.jpg

Well all the stuff got rearranged, and another pile of **** got sent to the refuse dump but unfortunately no photos of said organistation.

In April I managed to get myself back into gainful employment and with this came a company van  As such I didnt really want my wee MG ZR sat out in the driveway for weeks on end and instead rearranged the garage once more to allow enough room to fit the car in.

You can just about see what I had done here:

002bt.jpg

Now, with work being completely non-car related, I recently got the old desire back to just man up and get on with making the garage usable in the evenings and weekends. Unfortunately funds are tight as we are saving for our wedding, a house purchase, the honeymoon and I wish to have a few quid to one side to help get the Midget project on its way.

A friend and his dad were clearing out their garage and literally scrapping everything in sight. He dropped me round this top box, which although has no stamps, markings or badges is a really tough wee cookie and is in great condition seeing as its maybe 30 years old

Im guessing it is late 70's/early 80's judging by the 1983 British GP sticker under the lid. Thats as much as I know about it.

Well this was my trigger to just get on with the rest of the garage.

I managed to acquire 4 lengths of 2x4 and 4 lengths of 2x2.

004wgz.jpg

Anyway, no scribbles, no drawings, 4 hours and a borrowed wood saw.

With my proposed surface for the top of it, it will be level with the top of my current roll cab. Is just tall enough to accept 3 of my work's projector boxes which are surplus to requirement but strong and useful in place of storage bins until i sort the attic out.

Its 6' long and 32" wide as the worktop thats coming is 33" wide and i fancied a little overlap.

I also liberated 2 server rack drawers from work that were heading for the skip and mounted them at the far end, really heavy duty ball bearings and the rollers extend far enoug to allow the drawer to extend clear of the front of the bench.

All cut by hand and thrown together using 3" 7mm wood screws sent home by my DeWalt 18v beauty.

Anyway, I am proud as it is my first ever attempt at any form of woodwork.

And a huge thanks to those who posted theirs on here, it gave me the ideas for notching the 2x4 :D

005lie.jpg

The front edge of the bench is also built to take the doors when i get the ply and alloy together to make them and sit flush with the outside edge.

Jenson decided he should inspect the work carried out and determine whether or not it was up to his mediocre standards

002kgm.jpg

Today I had two sheets cut for the top, 3/4" MDF and 3/4" Marine Ply. The rear edge is 2" shy to allow me to caulk in the edge of my dado trunking as and when i decide to fit it.

Definitely a solid piece f workshop furniture now.

Also put my laptop (with broken screen) into the top server rack drawer and ran the cables through spiral flexible conduit up to the back of the bench where my screen is. unfortunately I didnt have a USB keyboard to hand, so havent wired it in yet, but that will be complete before the weekend is over.

003qjg.jpg

and of course the overview.

004dei.jpg

Garage is very slowly starting to take shape and become a usable area where I can actually enjoy working on my toys.

Onwards and upwards.

I spent a couple of hours today sifting and sorting through the piles of random tools, odds and sods and car parts and layed out all the spare/surplus tools on the bench.

005bev.jpg

And the overview from the far end of the garage

004pkd.jpg

Still hundreds of small touches I have to finish. Also left with more piles of useless **** I need to get rid of. But I can now get the car in, store everything i need to store, and actually work aswell.

Over the moon with the room I have managed to free up, and I know there is sooooo much more to do. But i also have to make sure everything I do can be removed and shifted to our new place when the time comes.

Anyhoo, I will keep this up to date instead of having multiple threads across the forum.

Thanks for reading, and as per usual, all ideas and constructive criticism are welcomed.

Looks good to me. As I am doing my garage I find that the **** = (useful stuff that's in the way) gets shuffled from one place to another and then back again to get the cars in at night. I am teaching myself something just not sure what?

This is damn cool dude! a bit more representative of the space we have on this side of the pond (sadly) i'd kill for the space some of the guys have on here! awesome to see what your doing with the space tho, its made me realise I need to get my a**e in gear.

All you need now is a beer fridge in under the desk (even though you have a fridge freezer in there already) :p

keep up the good work!

Thanks guys.

Mike306 - its all i have to work with at the minute, so its got to be right.

Overhead cupboards all round are gonna be soon, after I have built a small lean-to against the back of the garage to hide the lawnmower all the other **** that should never be in a garage ;)

As for the contents of the fridge - im working on it ;)

006zsz.jpg

still a few spare 12 packs to throw in there, but with me not being a drinker it only really gets used at parties and visitors

Cheers man,

Definitely a bit more of a "realistic" garage for your average joe. Especially in the UK where we shat upon for space

I have to say most of you dudes who post here from the UK do a real good job with what space you have. I whine about not having enough room with a 24'x26' two car garage..

Unfortunately GJ has ruined me and apart from my wedding im not allowing myself to own a first home that doesnt have enough room to have at least a 3 car garage.

If thats not possible, then enough room to throw up a metal shed to go to town on.

Really really cant wait to be in somewhere we own so I can do as I wish with the space we have

well, speaking from experience - you can get carried away with space. And, someone ALWAYS has more.

I've got a 3 car - but, it's not really has functional as you'd think. The famous Jack Olsen has a small 2 car....but, i dont' think anyone would argue it's not enormously "usuable".

You just have to work with what you have and make the best of it.

To be honest, right now - I'd gladly trade you my garage for yours. You can have the three car AND the 36 straight days of 106 degrees (with lows in the high 80's).

Sure - it's big...but you damn sure don't want to be out in it. :)

Cheers man.

Jacks is awesome and although mine won't ever be as aesthetically pleasing I'm hoping it can be just as functional.

Not willing to put money into anything that I can't bring with me when we find our own place.

However I did purchase 3 complete bays of pallet racking. So 6 uprights, 20 chipboard shelves and 40 beams. Need to cut 4" off the uprights to allow them to fit below my current roof, but they should allow for a LOT of organised storage above head height and therefore out of the way. Just need to figure out now how to get 24ft of 600mm wide racking in one end now. Eeek

Just a couple of new pics for now whilst on lunch.

Will do a proper update this evening. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1313581059.054676.jpg
Still organising, but first bit of racking is up and in use.

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1313581111.966638.jpg

Unfortunately I'm still finding gaps in which to put tools. But progress has been made and I can finally get a car back in the garage too. Woot

Had more time tonight out in the play pen and threw up the second rack, removes some more old **** from the walls and managed to find a home for almost everything in the garage.

Still refusing to paint the place, although the photos really eally dont do the garage any justice whatsoever.

Alrighty then.

More shelves in place, welder has a temporary home and I've managed to find a home for all the random tools.

Quick tidy and it's ready for working in. Just need to empty all the junk from the car end now. One last trip to the dump and I'm bringing the midget over from storage. :)

005nb.jpg

New shelving with attached 6ft light.

006beh.jpg

New power cable was too short to route how i wanted it, so will get another bit cut and terminated tomorrow and run the cable in trunking up the wall to prevent any damage

Just going to start hunting for various banners and flags to put on the Walls now.

I'm well chuffed despite it never going to be to the level of epicness of some on here.

So a huge thanks to everyone on here who has inspired me to get to the point I am currently at.

Cheers.

Pete

Looks great, Pete! Very efficient use of a small space, and it looks like it would be a pleasure to work in there. Love the Midget, too!

Cheers dude,

Unfortunately Gumtree (our equivalent of Craigslist) is full of dreamers and it is very very rare to find bargains for the shop/shed. As such, efficiency costs money. However, I work closely with a lot of schools and during our summer break they take the opportunity to remodel/renew whatever they can within their budget so their skips and scrap piles have been raided to within an inch of their lives.

Ive just run into a dilemma though, someone has asked me to do some fab work on the underside of their Mitsubishi Mk2 Sapporo Turbo. Which is fantastic news for me, but there just isnt the room in the garage for a car as big as that, so may have to go mobile for a few weeks :(

Anything new in the garage? Couchmechanic?

A few cobwebs, between working and the last week being struck down with gastroenteritis it's been slow progress.

I did dander out to it with a coffee to reflect on the work that is yet to be done, ended up with a sleepless night last night due to that too. All going well if all the silly things fall into place in the coming week then the '67 teabag should be delivered and work can begin.

Oh, I did change the brakes on the daily driver, but thats neither exciting nor interesting. Lol

Henry, unfortunately due to it being rented accomodation, there is little more I can do that would be worthwhile doing.

I have a single phase Mill en route and I am currently hunting for a converted single phase lathe - both will be old british built stuff as I refuse point blank to use/operate all this inaccurate **** from the far east.

Someday I will have a garage/shop worthy of a 40+ page thread on here, in the mean time, ill keep working on whatever I can to bring the £££ in and help towards getting that property and actually owning it too.

Long term Friend/customer dropped his MGB off to me last week

I am slowly working through all the final details, getting clocks lined up straight, brake lines in, detail the paint, final fit carpets and trim, then fluids, fit prop shaft and get the carbs tuned so she runs nice.

Ive also got down the cheap route for my nut/bolt/bits and bobs organisation - this is just a stop gap until 1) i get enough **** to warrant a larger unit and 2) I can find a decent metal rack/cabinet which will house everything neatly

Also just bought 2.5litres of hammered mid green metal paint so I can begin restoring the bender and the guillotine. Intend to use all new hardware throughout, of course having it all zinc plated before fitting for longevity and aesthetics too

Pete,

You have really maximized the narrow space you have there. I understand you don't want to invest too much time or money in any type of improvement you can't move with you to your own place, so that makes it all the more challenging.

Jenson does seem quite content to be a photo model for your project. Is he named after a certain Formula 1 driver?

Thanks Bevo,
Yes the pup is named after Mr Button, IMO one of the only gentlemen race drivers left.

It's difficult working in such a tight space, even more so when there are multiple projects on the go, but so far I am just about coping, need to find a bigger space if I manage to get ahold of the other machinery I wish to own.

Well continuing with the folder resto today,

Here you can see a previous (********) repair to the crack in the frame
1325166860677.jpg

I am considering taking it to the local heavy engineering shop to have them repair the crack, but I fear it will only crack again in time, any thoughts?

Main carcass now down to a manageable size and weight, everything on this seems to weigh an absolute ton. Prep will begin on this piece shortly once I have made space to remove it from the stand
1325167043339.jpg

And now for the folding arm, it is almost fully prepped, just needs rubbed down with alcohol and sh will be ready for paint.
1325167043339.jpg

I am painting the whole thing hammered mid green, leaving the machined surfaces in their current state but cleaner.

Hopefully more updates after I have done the brake pads on the two road cars this afternoon

Today SWMBO wanted a trip to ikea for new bed-ware.

Well, I don't think she was prepared for my purchases. After a quick scout round the shop, missing out anything that was relevant to bedding or workshop use we finally hit the bargain basement at the end. So I found myself another trolley and for less than $40 this is what I brought home

10 of these glass/alloy cabinet doors

10 of these larger glass/alloy cabinet doors
1325347000467.jpg

10 pairs of these table legs

10 glass shelves
1325347119198.jpg

And 10 pairs of these handles that I liked
1325347169023.jpg

Overall quite chuffed with that score, just need to figure out what to do with them all now.
