Last week I showed you my jig I made when I built my dad an iron fence. I just uploaded a video on youtube of me building a fence panel using the jig.

I also show you a jig I made to help weld on the finials straight. I hope this will help someone if they are looking to build their own iron fence.

My video is at www.retroweld.com.

Let me know if anyone has any questions.

Thanks guys. Douglas

Looks great. I've considered building my own, but hesitate after reading how much time Jack Olsen spent on his. Is there a significant cost savings for DIY to account for the large amount of work? And why face weld vs. using punched channel?

Not questioning your work, just trying to learn the pros and cons before starting this project. I want to replace about 80' of 4' high chain link and 20' of 6' high hideous vinyl.

Punch channel is great but it costs a lot more. One benefit of the punch channel is it eliminates the need for a jig. Now that I have the jig, the time consuming part of the build is welding all of the finials on. I had 20 per panel. Each panel is 8 feet long. I think we saved about 50% when I built my dads fence. You would have to price it out to see what is best for you. It does take a lot of time and work but every time I see my dads fence I feel proud and think to myself...."I made that".

One thing you could do it buy just enough materials to make one panel. See how it goes. Then decide if its worth it or not.
