Heyas!

Anybody know of the equivalent forum for irrigation aficionados? :)

I'm in the process of building my new house and workshop, and I have to bone up on the irrigation (as in lawn sprinkler systems).

I know there must be an equivalent forum out there. thirdgen.org for my camaro, chris-craft.org for my boat, garagejournal.com for my shop, troublefreepool.com for my pool, etc.

Before I trudge through a few hours of Google, I thought maybe somebody could tell me the DEFINITIVE irrigation forum.

Thanks!

I did the same, looked and looked. Then just paid a company to do it, ended up being 350 ish a zone. For a complete install, i figured it would take more of my time that it was worth. They did a better job than i could do also, everything gets water.

Most of the big irrigation companies - like rainbird, will design a system for you for free (of course it is going to spec all their parts, but nothing wrong with that)

I have purchased a lot of things from SprinklerWarehouse - I believe they are located in Texas, and their web site is very helpful. They have a lot of stuff you will not find at your local Lowes or Home Depot

Drip irrigation is the way to go where you can use it. Living in S Cal we are currently in a severe drought and most people's yards look terrible. Eventually I am going to replace the front yard grass and install drip tubing UNDER the sod for greater efficiency

I installed mine and it works great. Not hard to design if you know check the flow rates per head and group / match them to your water supply. I think lawnsite has an irrigation section. Spend some time looking at the catalogs and install guide from the manufacturers and sites like irrigation direct and you should be good to go.

Slightly off topic, but does anyone have any experience with any of the so called smart controllers that are out there today like the RainMachine or others? I'd really like to be able to program/control the system from the web or phone app and the weather/water savings seems to be a nice feature too.

I'm running the Rachio 1st Gen 8 zone controller, had it for one season so far. I've been very happy with it, no issues at all. I got tired of manually turning my system off when it had rained and didn't need to run, and this works great for adjusting based on the weather. It has good reviews, and Rachio also has a very helpful support forum. They have a newer model out now but only the 16 zone is available at this point.

Thanks for all the responses so far!

Yeah, I'm going to have someone do it, but I figured I'd bone up on all the latest gizmos and techniques in the exciting world of irrigation, lol.

+1

Look into Netafim. They invented drip, 40+ years ago.

I just converted two more lawns using their techline subsurface products. Can water the lawns while sitting next to the pool, kids and dog playing on the grass! No water stains on patio, walkways or buildings.... Saves 80% of water, etc, etc

Years ago I paid someone for a system...like virtually EVERYTHING, I wound up redoing it years later

Heya all!

Thanks for the replies!

I did end up finding a local contractor (I'm out in the COUNTRY) that was very good. Texas A&M grad, very particular, knowledgeable, etc.

Thanks to some of the original replies above I was able to incorporate some of the ideas I picked up out of the various forums.

The only change I made after the fact was the controller.

The installer originally installed a pretty good commercial controller with rain gauge and remote capability.

However, it was pretty much 1990's technology. It worked, and would probably survive a hurricane, but it was definitely clunky.

I replaced it myself with a Rachio v2 controller, 16 zone. The v3 is out now. No real need to upgrade quite yet, but I'll keep an eye on it.

What a difference. Total control from the phone app, and the latest update has added some incredible features.

Anyway, thanks again!

I'm in the industry and lawnsite is not for homeowners.

The yard equivalent of hvac-talk. :bounce:

If you have the DIY bug, you can find out everything about the heads on the web sites, then draw it up on grid paper. The hard part is the digging - at least around here where you can land a 747 on your yard and not leave ruts.
