Irrigation valve

Hello all! I've got a problem with my irrigation valve. I replaced the valves electric switch and now it won't come on with the clock. The other day it started leaking water. When you unscrew the black switch is water suppose to be coming out of the hole the switch screws into?

Making good "underground" electrical connections is key. Silicone filled "grease caps" wire nuts seem to work best.

Some valves are a piloted valve, meaning there's a small electrically actuated valve which controls the "pilot". Once the pilot is opened, the water pressure opens some sort of a piston or spool which opens the main flow path. Some valves, Hunter as I recall, have a quarter-turn screw thread on the pilot, so you can manually open the valve to check or diagnose or irrigate, all without the benefit of electricity. However, left unscrewed too far, the valve will leak water and not be in control of the pilot flow.

When you refer to the "black switch" are you talking about the cylindrical object on the right side of your photo? That is a solenoid valve. They rarely fail and yes, water will leak out if you loosen it. It should be snug. Will the valve operate if you open the Phillips head screw on the left? That is the override. If it does work then you probably have a broken wire or corroded connection.
