I was swapping out the cam in my GTO last night and ended up stripping a bolt. No big deal, wasn't the first time; won't be the last. I went to Ace and got a new bolt and an Irwin tap to thread through the hole. To my surprise, the tap is made in the USA!

I think I'll be buying more from them.

I have taps and dies that actually say Ace on them and also USA. Are those made by Irwin as well? They are several years old.

My Irwin tap and Die set says "Hansen" on them? Made in USA but missin a couple taps. Do they still sell the Hansen ones? I would like them to match since most likely I will be selling or trading it anyway. I have a full Mac set for regular use.

There is a Westlake Ace Hardware off of Air Depot and Reno, across from the Sears store and Evans Hardware off of Douglas between Reno and 15th.

I never use taps from the store.. being a machinist and seeing *carbon steel* taps... that just hurts my brain. Good that you found one made here, but as said, it's old.

I was under the impression irwin made the mac set. If so, keep the irwin set and sell the mac for more money...

Sometimes at sears I see various bits and cutting tools labeled "made in china" or "made in mexico". If I leaf through to the back I often find ones stating made in the USA (bosch vermont american irwin hansen ect ect) with dates ranging as far back as 1995. Also often note slight to major differences in packaging although part numbers seem the same.

No one ever buys enough before shelf is restocked, so those old ones just keep getting left back there.

Once I saw vicegrips in black/yellow cardboard displayed behind the newer ones. I passed them up.

Irwin bought Hanson (I think back in the 70's). Hanson is a tap and die and drill bit manufacturer, and I believe their taps and dies are still made in the USA today. You get into the "global components" stuff with the sets. I believe the tap handles are imported and a few other things in the tap and die sets.
