Ordinarily, yes, 14 ga. is considered too thick to be easily workable for body panels. Often there are other car parts that could be made of 14 ga. , like brackets or panels subject to rust, etc. When I worked on 1956 Ford F-100 trucks, I used 14 ga. to repair rusted rear fenders where they bolted to the running boards. Handy stuff to have around.

Generally you want something with a tad more *** than stock. I use 18 for floor pans and usually 20 for lower quarters, rockers, doors.18 is kinda tough to get a short curve like some rocker panels have.
I work on OLD stuff.Trucks and Jeep-ish type vehicles, station wagons etc. I have no idea what kind of scrap they build new **** out of.
Lots of guys cut patch panels from wrecked cars of the same model.
Big pieces to be had off the roof, trunks, hood etc. Cheap too. That's what I' would do with a late model.

Vans make good sources of steel too. I used to get pieces from a friend that worked for a truck accessory company when they cut in windows, roof AC's, etc.
