Is 150 foot candles overkill?

I am now in the stage of planning out my lighting for my shop 32x60 with 12' 6" sidewall that cathedrals up to 18 plus at peak. I was planning on using 40 8foot 4 bulb t8 fixtures with 6500k daylight deluxe bulbs. Is there an easy way to calculate the footcandles I can expect from this? they will be spaced every six feet and run from sidewall up to peak and back to other sidewall which will be 4 fixtures. So 4 fixtures every six feet. Getting to the real question I want 150 foot candles, but I am going to setup many zones so I can turn on 1/4 1/2 3/4 etc depending on what Im doing? Just wondering what your thoughts on this are? Thanks

I install lights in production facilities arounfpd the world and we never exceed 70 ft candles @ 3' above finished floor and it is plenty.

I think all trying to achieve 150 ft candles is going to do is cost you a **** load of ballast, ,with 2 **** loads of bulbs. With that number, you will always have a ballaast humming or a bulb out. You will spend a fair amount of time just servicing lights not to mention the cost.

Have you done a light study to get an idea of wht this will look like and get an opinion from your light supplier.

I used 17 four-bulb T8 fixtures in my 24x40 shop with 12' ceilings.
The rows are 5'6" apart.
That is 68 bulbs, or 14 sq/ft per bulb, and it is definitely not overkill.
You are talking about 12 sq/ft per bulb, and they are higher off the floor, so a very similar situation.
I did not go with 6500k bulbs, though. Those are very very white, and would seem even brighter.

And I read this thread wondering why someone would build a candle that was 150 ft tall, and how would they get it up there! Dang, expectations crushed!

My lighting is by bay (three bays) and two levels. First level is a bunch of T-8 fixtures (eight in each bay) that come on quickly and give acceptable light to do basic tasks. Then I have (again switched by bay) four 400W metal halide HID lights to provide maximum light. These require warm-up (about 5 minutes max) but if I am working on something that needs good lighting they are just the trick. I also have task lights over most of the work benches, too...

But I've never measured light levels--I only care that the light is enough for me (with old fart eyes) to see to work by.

A 'calculated' 150 ft-candles is NOT overkill for a precision assembly/work area. IMHO.

It would be overkill for a sleeping area, a romantic dinner, a nightclub, or a movie theater. :p123

Multiple zones are usually a good idea, as you can adjust the light level and to a certain extent the lighting direction as desired.

8 ft T8 bulbs are not as common or have as many choices in CRI and color temp as the 4 ft T8 bulbs AFAIK.

Speaking of 'color', I used to HATE fluorescent bulbs. Flickering, buzzing, humming, poor color rendering and so on. Gave me headaches and eyestrain all the time. That changed when I got some decent electronic ballasts and some full-spectrum (relatively) high CRI tubes to go in them.

So make sure you use 'decent' electronic ballasts and 'decent' tubes with good spectral qualities and a good CRI (which I consider to be 86 or better).

Shifting units, 1 foot-candle ~ 10.7 lux. So your 'desired' lighting level of 150 ft-candles is ~1605 lux. Which is about the lighting level of a cloudy overcast day (about 1000 lux). Full daylight but not direct sun is 10,000-25,000 lux.

Going back to lux and thus lumens, since bulbs are usually listed with a 'lumens output', let's see where you are with the total lumens theoretically being generated.

An 8 ft T8 bulb should be a 'theoretical' mean lumen output of about 5800 lumens (Sylvania FO96 T8). Times your proposed 40 fixtures x 4 bulbs/fixture = 160 bulbs equals a theoretical mean calculated 928,000 lumens.

Wow, you say? Let's try and adjust those values a bit into the real world. Light output from a fixture is usually 80% at best from the 'raw' bulb lumens.

928,000 x 0.8 = 742,400 'adjusted' lumens

Now let's spread those lumens over the floor space.

742,400 / (32 ft x 60 ft) = 386 lumens/ ft2

Since a foot-candle is the same as lumens/ft2, you are about 2x over your desired target lighting level.

That's also a lighting level of about 2x over the 'recommended' 100-150 lumens/ft2 for "precision assembly areas".

But you will have some additional lighting 'losses' and non-uniformity from the fixtures going up the cathedral roof from ~12 ft above the floor to ~18 ft above the floor.

So in summary, yes 40 4-bulb 8 ft T8 fixtures for your 32 ft x 60 ft space is a bit of 'overkill' in the lighting level. By about roughly 2x.

You can use that and just not necessarily run all the banks of lights at the same time, or you can reduce the total number of installed fixtures/bulbs and still keep them on multiple banks.

That makes sense b/c he used 40x4x8' bulbs and you used 4' bulbs

You had originally stated you were looking to use 40 fixtures, each using four 8 ft T8 bulbs/tubes. So that's why I used the lumen numbers for 8 ft bulbs/tubes.

If you are instead planning or considering using 40fixtures, each using four 4 ft T8 bulbs/tubes, then obviously that is a different set of numbers.

40 fixtures x 4 bulbs/fixture x 2300 lumens/bulb x 0.80 'efficiency factor' = 294,440 total 'effective' lumens

Spread those lumens over the shop footprint and you have

294,000 lumens / (32 x 60 ft^2) = 153 lumens/ft^2

Right on your 'targeted' lighting level.

Also note or check that not all fluorescent fixtures are made to be mounted or used in a non-level orientation. Just a something to check on.

I used 9 CFLs that were rated at 105 watts (420 Incandescent Equal) for a total of 3780 watts or 64350 lumens total. The lit area is 30x30 at an average height of 15 ft.
