Sounds big but it really isn't. Not with everything you want to go in. Don't get me wrong it will fit, but you won't have much work space left.

We built a 30x30 since we couldn't go any larger, and it ran out of space pretty fast. With everything you want to put in there, it won't be big enough at all. For all you want, I'd go 30x40 if you can swing it

They are never big enough, never enough storage space, never enough power, never enough air pressure or volume, never enough lighting, or venting, or cooling, or heating, or etc.

Build what you can and love it until you expand it...;)

You can check out my 30 x 40 and I want more room.

They are never big enough. All I can tell you is to either build it 2.....3 times the size you think your going to need, or build it with the idea of an addition in the future. I know that isn't what you want. To hear, but........

We built a 28x28 for a buddy i race with, I tried to talk him into going bigger since he could, but he said "it'll be big enough"...all he had before was a single stall. Well, once he put his truck and boat in there, he seen just how small the space really was. I dont have any pictures of his garage loaded up with his possesions though. You can have a small work bench and a small amount of room for tiny projects, but dont expect to have two cars and all the other things you listed and then have room to work on them...you will have to remove a vehicle or two for that.

It's big enough to:
1, park a couple of cars
or
2, store a bunch of ****
or
3, Work on 1 vehicle....

but not 2 of those 3 choices.. & certainly not big enough for all 3...

What kind of car, pickup, tractor, are they fullsize? If you can i would go biger. I had and want a 30x30. I have a lot of tools but the main thing is i like to work in it in the winter and the old one was easy to heat.

I have a 28x28. My super cab 6 1/2 foot bed f-150 is so tight in there I just leave it outside. I keep the wife's fusion in one bay and have my workbench and other tools in the other. You will not fit all of that stuff in it comfortably.

You need to take a good, hard look at what you need the space to do. Most here will say (with a fair amount of good reason) that you can never build too big. The reality is that more space costs more money, and you may have limits on how much you can do anyways.

First question to ask yourself is "how much am I willing to spend." Be realistic. Once you have a firm number, you'll have a better idea how large you can go depending on what you are allowed to build on your lot. Need + Budget = Size.

For the things you list you'll probably be able to fit it all in, but it will be tight.

Too small. Assuming outside dimensions.

28' wide. Two 8' garage doors is 16'. you want 3' (maybe 4') between two vehicles; now we're at 19'. You have 9' left over. Put 2' deep shelving against the two outside walls; you have 5' feet left. The walls will be at least 6" thick; now you have 4' left. You'll have 2' (24") or 1' (12") between the garage door opening and the shelving.

28' deep. How long are your cars? say 17' to 18' feet? Small car ... 15'? A long box P/U w/standard cab is 17'. Lets go with 17'. Two feet in back and two feet in front ... left with 13'. Walls 6"; now we're at 12'. Two foot deep bench and you have 10' to tuck the snowmobile and tractor into.

Doesn't leave you much "extra". After being on the Forum for a while and thinking about my own upcoming project, I've come up with some guidelines:

1. Build the maximum you can that zoning, side yards, setbacks, esthetics and curb appeal will allow.

2. Build the max you can reasonably afford; even if you have to delay things like finishing the radiant heat, electrical, insultation, extensive lighting, outside concrete until you can afford it.

Good luck!

Have you considered building a lean to style overhang where you could store something? Possibly parking one vehicle under that would give you the indoor room you need at a considerably lower cost than doing a larger enclosed area.

No.

I built a 40'x30' 3 yrs. ago, well evidently over the winter I decided to put a few vehicles in it among other things. I ended up with a path going from the walk through door to the one vehicle that runs.

Last weekend with the help of a friend I got it a bit more organized. By mid spring it should be back to being useful and looking respectful again.

Think about the question without the 28x28, when you ask a women "is it big enough?" the answer you get is "NO" it is never big enough. Sorry, my insecurities just came through.

Seems like 30' x 40' is the norm amoungst GJers on the "small size" while the next step up is 40' x 60' depending on space. Then bigger than this is anybody's guess.

I'd sure plan on radiant floor heat and plan for lift location (ie both to route radiant lines, plus strengthen concrete) . . . along with ceiling height.

Couple other cool tricks you might want to put in floor are Pull Cans (ie embedded hook in floor) - - - especially if you do body work and need to chain down vehicle ; possibly might want exhaust port in floor to outside so cars can be running in garage while you're working on them with door shut.

Good luck on your decision and plans.

Not big enough for all of that stuff. I have a 22x28 that has only been for tools and projects. 2 car attached is for the wife's extra horse stuff and parking. Lawn mowers and other tools in the hay shed, tractor stays outside for now. 28 deep is enough room that I can pull the crew cab dulley into the garage and work on it but it is still tight. Workbench and large parts washer are on the back wall. 28 wide will get you 2 stalls with room on the side. Something I don't have with 22' width. Now that I've inherted dad's wook working tools I'm down to 1 working stall with the other side tool storage. I think you'll find that you need to go wider to get what you want. My next shop will be atleast 40' wide if not wider.

NO. Not even close. That whole pile of stuff you listed will fit, but that's about it.

My 30x36 doesn't have that much going in it and everyday I wish it was bigger.

Best advice I've ever gotten:

Figure out how big you're allowed to build, figure out how much you can afford, then figure out a way to build it bigger.

The tractor is just a small lawn tractor, i just need a corner for the snowmobile and tractor, and a small work bench. Other then that, probably a lawnmower, some things (racks, shovels). i can hang. Only work i will be doing we be on the bench, if i need more space, i can pull a vehicle out, wifes car and my F-150. There will be pull down steps to up top and store things up there. this is about as big as i can afford or i would go bigger.
Thanks for all the replies !!

I equate size of garage to a shade tree mechanic as horsepower to a motorhead; you can NEVER have enough. That being said, my detached garage (interior 28 wide x 33 deep) is a about as small as I'd like to have. The depth allows a comfortable 30" wide x 19' long work bench (6 tool cabinets fit under the workbench) and a small room framed in room for storage and the air compressor.

While I agree with the other guys on never having enough space, I think that you are probably going about it the right way in looking toward storage in the attic. Hopefully you will have some good storage space up there without losing sight of the need to insulate and put down a plywood or OSB floor.

If this is your home "forever", I would seriously look into building larger or at least a two story to make use of the upstairs. If not, then you might be at the upper limit without compromising the potential resale value or ability. Odd that it may seem, not all people want a huge garage / shop in the back yard and a 28x28 is right on the border..

The other thing you can do is to build a storage shed later on for all the lawn tools, bicycles, etc stuff that doesn't belong in a real shop anyway.

Here is a picture of my garage. It is 24X36 with a 12' lower floor with second story storage. You are so right that not all people want a huge garage. I live in a neighborhood of 400 houses and my house took 26 months to sell while 32 other houses in the neighborhood sold before mine. The number one complaint was the garage was too big.

The lift went with the garage.

Measure out 28X28 on your lawn and put these things in the area. Take it from there!

Great advice from Dan inthewind.

I have a 28 x 28 and it's OK but not really enough if it is your only workspace. We park an F-150 Extracab and an Explorer in it, as well as a Craftsman yard tractor in front of the Explorer. Have room for a couple of benches and the necessary power tools but even a couple of feet each way (i.e. 30 x 30) would make a HUGE difference.

A shop is never big enough! You will always want more space, no matter how big you build it. Build as big as you can!

I don't know what it is but when you get a big space, it just fills up. I've had friends give me stuff like a tire machine and a shop smith just because I had the room to store it and they didn't. I actually gave both back a year later when my shop got so cluttered that I literally started tripping over the stuff and realized I wasn't really using it.
