I'm confused? If you chose a control device by the FLA (NEC Tables 430-148, 149, and 150) and voltage for the motor it controls, you have specified it for the motor HP by design.

Have a look at the specs on a motor starter......

All to often people only look at the FLA.....

Clue...big difference between inductive vs resistive

I've looked plenty close at them. Industrial Controls Engineer for the last 35 years. Have specified a few thousand of them in that time. It's not just about HP either....

Maybe not a problem for you , but when someone else decides to "unplug" the compressor while it's running (or worse yet, starting) - that's when the problem occurs - commonly referred to as arc flash.

There's usually a reason for code requirements, even though they sometimes seem to cover the remotest of possibilities. While there are some code requirements that are lobbied into existence by the manufacturers, this is not one of them.

And if anyone other then me is trying to unplug my air compressor then they are probably robbing my garage & I hope they do get shocked..

Of note I had never even heard of a Pin & Sleeve connector.. Had to google it & it turns out that I have used them 10's of thousands of times. Very common for all the electrical in convention centers.

Ten thousand is a large number. For example it's around three times a day, every day for about ten years.

But when your doing hundreds a day it adds up quick. It was for Conventions where everything is temporary & gets redone weekly if not more.. I always thought those connections were just so that the plug's didnt come undone.

I think the problem with the Baldor or Marathon 7.5 hp vs. 5 hp is the amount of amps that are being used in the shop when the motor kicks in. if a shop is welding and grinding at the same time and has only a 100 amp or 150 service a 7.5 hp motor might be to big.

I have no experience with 7.5 hp box store compressors but i have worked in a shop with a 100 amp service, that had a Miller 252 welder, 5 hp Marathon motor pressure washer and a 5 hp Baldor motor Ingersoll-Rand air compressor going at the same time.

Something must get lost in the picture.
No offense, but it looks stubby.
I have a 5HP R15 pump Champion with a 80gal circa 2003 and it seems to be a quite a bit taller than your pic.
Mine from floor to highest point on pump (filter) is 75"

I have the same unit as you (rebadged Snap On.) I have been looking at Slodat's version for my new shop. It's does look squatty in person as well but it is also much wider than I expected, in fact almost too wide for where I designed it to go. I'ts a beast of a compressor.

Slodat, that's a neat compressor. Never knew they made a style like that.

i have always thought that a quality industrial air compressor was a worthwhile investment. Years ago 5 hp seemed to be the limit for single-phase, 7.5 hp and up was 3-phase.

Well.. I don't see $1k difference in price. I paid less than their website price.. quite a bit less. A few hundred more than your IR you linked. I didn't even consider IR. I wanted this specific model because it spins 575 pump rpm. It's "quiet" for a ~26scfm reciprocating compressor because of this. Also, I really wanted Champion. They run for decades. I'm not anti import stuff. I only plenty. But, in this case, a very high quality American brand was essentially the same price.

Another nice thing about the Champion is the way the auto drain works. It doesn't use a timer.

Cool...I just went off the link price you posted regarding price.

I bought mine back in 2001...and there was a lot less info on the net to make a decision. At the time I was seriously limping along on a 25 gal Porter Cable oilless POS and writing in PAUSE statements for my CNC plasma cutter...which is why I went to the local shop supply (lifts compressors etc) and pulled the trigger on the one I got.

About a week later, the Porker Cable was still plugged in...I came into the shop in the morning to hear a horrendous noise. The tank to unloader pipe blew off and the connecting rod was sticking through the side of the block! WTF! The new one arrived just in time!

At the time I bought they had a really quiet one (I think rotary screw) but it only did 16 CFM. I wanted more...since I don't plan on buying another one any time soon. ;)

Good luck with yours. Looks like a nice setup. Low RPM is always a good thing...like a diesel :D

not sure if you are looking to buy new or used, but there is a nice R-version of Slodat's on craigslist near you in Magnolia. If it weren't 3-phase I would have made the drive out there and it would be in my garage already!

Lol, I have been eyeballing that ad for awhile. I literally have no room to store it if I bought it. My garage is stuffed and I am not at the point to where I can move stuff into my new shop.

I think they also had a drier with it originally that was sold. It's a heck of a deal.
